Queens of the Stone Age Deliver on 'The Way You Used to Do'

The new Queens of the Stone Age single, "The Way You Used to Do," is exactly what you'd want it to be. It never rests, it's brimming with insanity, and it features Josh Homme's signature howling vocals and guitar trickery; the band has produced yet another unforgettable desert rock track. In other words, they're doing what they've always done, and that's not at all a bad thing.

The guitar parts in this song are simply nuts. In fact, they occasionally sound like they're about to lose all control, as Homme and Co. let loose in distorted string bends and slides that sound like inhuman screams. In one instance, the guitars even communicate with one another in a right-to-left conversation of absolute madness. The whole track moves along to a simple, off-tempo handclap beat and energetic drumming. The drumming also sounds incredible, thanks to the Jon Theodore, the newest addition to the band. It now makes perfect sense why Homme recently described the new QOTSA album, Villains, by saying that it sounded like the musical equivalent of a "panther in the trees leaping out in the darkness." Yeah, now we get it.

And then there's Homme's lyrics, which are as delightfully suggestive as ever ("can we outrun everyone?/ but it doesn't matter now/ just come and wrap me up now/ like the way you used to do"). Yup, Queens of the Stone Age's personality hasn't changed one bit. Why would you want it to?

Also, we now have an official release date for Villains (August 25th!), as well as confirmation that the band will be touring soon. Once you're done jamming out to "The Way You Used to Do," check out the dates below.
