WATERS' "Mickey Mantle" is a tempered tune, catchy and full of lyrics with consequence. The song contemplates aging (illusion, disillusion, and what it is to be "not too young"). Waters' usual jagged guitar pop sound is ravaged and all that is left is the bare bones balladesque tune that is "Micky Mantle." The new music video reflects the repition of life, and the slow act of aging inward and outward, by depicting band member Van Pierszalowski getting up (next to a spinning globe) and ready in the morning...in stop motion.
Pierszalowski makes coffee in a mason jar via drip down coffee filter to the lyrics "turn into an old romantic" as a woman appears and disappears around him. I had no idea that teeth brushing, coffee making, and guitar playing could be so evocative. The majority of the music video is blue, grey, or white which lends to the melancholy melody of "Mickey Mantle."
Check out a visit from Van in his old band, Port O'Brien, at the Guest Apartment.
