Parakeet is the side project of Mariko Doi (the bassist for Yuck). Doi and James Thomas, from the band History of Apple Pie, worked together to give us "Shonen Hearts," a colorful, upbeat guitar tune. Doi's music making vehicle is a little more noise rock than Yuck, and "Shonen Hearts" is the perfect representation of Parakeet's alternative/grunge sound. It's the definition of "a jam." The song blends even amounts of vocals and guitar (or, to be more accurate, almost even...there is a tad more guitar). "Shonen Hearts" layers vocals and more complex instrumentals over a constant and steady guitar/drum rhythm. The vocals complete the overall sound and give the listener something entirely unique.
