What does a teenage girl do when she posts a video of herself singing on Vine and then goes from 50 to 1,000 followers in just one night? Well, if she's savvy enough, she would grab the opportunity by the balls and run with it. That's exactly what 20 year old singer-songwriter, Ruth B
, did. Fast forward to today and now she has over 2 million followers and a debut EP, The Intro
But why stop there? Due to copious fan requests, Ruth B then finished her first song, "Lost Boy", which was originally just written for a six second Vine clip. The song blew up, becoming one of the very few stripped-down piano ballads in the Hot 100. This grabbed the attention of several labels, but Columbia is the one that won Ruth over. The video for "Lost Boy" also dropped today and its everything we wanted and more:
We had the chance to sit down with Ruth B and ask her some questions about growing up in Canada, blowing up on Vine, and writing the sweetest songs ever. In addition, we played an improvisational game where we gave her a random word that she could write a song about on the spot, and not a single quiet moment went by before she was singing. In this game, Ruth B shows us that despite her soft-spoken voice and charismatic modesty, her talent is enough to light up the entire room. Its inspiring to see an independent artist go from writing songs in her bedroom to becoming an internet sensation, practically overnight.
