We don't regularly write about movies, but every so often, we get too excited to hold it in. Today, we're going to tell you why the upcoming Nicolas Winding Refn film, Only God Forgives is going to be fucking awesome. But before I do that, read this brief synopsis: Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the familys drugs smuggling operation. When Julians brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julians contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly. ...and watch the red band trailer (that means rated "R" in trailer talk)
The trailer should've convinced you on its own, but just in case we're wrong, here are a few additional points why Only God Forgives will be great. Have you ever seen Drive? Sure, everyone has a bone to pick with it, but it was an incredibly unique film, even if Gosling's role was a bit gruff. Only God Forgives reunites the same director-lead actor-soundtrack supervisor trio who together made it such an interesting movie. This trio being director Nicolas Winding Refn, actor Ryan Gosling, and an original soundtrack provided by Cliff Martinez (a former member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers). Watching the trailer, it's easy to see the similarities between the two movies, which means more great music and bad ass beat downs. Perfectly suits Ryan Gosling's strengths. He looks really handsome/tough in a three-piece-suit, kicks asses, and doesn't say much. Cliff Martinez knows how to make a weird soundtrack. The Drive soundtrack was undoubtedly the film's greatest attribute. In addition to his own compositions, Martinez added songs like the brutally droning "Night Call" by Kavinsky and contrasted with an ethereal 80s mindfuck in "Under Your Spell". Earlier this week, Only God Forgives' soundtrack track-listing was released, and we got our hands on the tune used in the trailer. "You Are My Dream" - Proud
Nothing like a weird Thai lullaby to make you sleep with one eye opened (looks like Gosling has a little trouble with that). Only God Forgives Soundtrack Track Listing: 1. Only God Forgives Cliff Martinez Feat. Gregory Tripi 2. Ask Him Why He Killed My Brother Cliff Martinez Feat. Gregory Tripi 3. Chang and Sword Cliff Martinez 4. Chang Vision Cliff Martinez Feat. Gregory Tripi 5. Do As Thou Will Cliff Martinez 6. Cant Forget Cliff Martinez Feat. Mac Quayle and Vithaya Pansringarm 7. Crystal Checking In Cliff Martinez Feat. Gregory Tripi 8. More Hands Cliff Martinez 9. Sister Part 1 Cliff Martinez Feat. Gregory Tripi 10. Take It Off Cliff Martinez Feat. Mac Quayle 11. Leave My Son In Peace Cliff Martinez Feat. You Are My Dream Proud Final Point: Swords It looks like there's going to be some serious sword damage done in this flick. Nothing is tougher than swords. Only God Forgives is due to hit theaters on July 19th.
