As the self-appointed official Bamboozle expert here at Baeble, I, Hanna Kasper, decided to do a special multiple part series on this year's festivities. That's right, I spent three days in the blistering hot New Jersey meadowlands all for you. Luckily my efforts and sun poisoning paid off. As previously mentioned, we love fun. And I got to interview them behind the scenes after their set on Sunday. We discussed music, Ke$ha, and why Jimmy Dugan should stay away from the clap, among other things.

These guys are awesome and they're also hilarious. I had an amazing time talking to them and you'll have just as much fun reading their answers.

Where did the band name come from?
Nate Ruess:We had a dinner at...
Jack Antonoff: At the Comedy Cellar
Nate: Yeah we had dinner at the Comedy Cellar
Andrew Dost: Yeah, Darryl Hammond was playing
Nate: Darryl Hammond was playing?
Jack: Darryl Hammond was playing.
Andrew: And the guy from Chapelle's Show that goes I'm rich bitch!
Nate: So we were sitting at the Comedy Cellar and a friend of ours had asked us what our band name was gonna be and we hadn't thought about it so we spent about 45 minutes coming up with a band name and at one point someone was like, Ice cream! and you two [Jack and Andrew] were like Ice cream's awesome! Ice cream's awesome! and I was like it's a terrible band name but I like what it conjures up and then someone else was like Fun. and we were like That's amazing. And we sat on it for about 6 months until we had to have a band name and then we were like, Oh, remember that time we were like fun's a cool name?
Andrew: And it is. And the rest is history.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Andrew: I don't know, as awesome as the bands I listen to now are, when I listen to like Weezer or The Rentals, that connects me to these inspirational feelings that I had back when I was like 15 and it still has that power over me. Like listening to 7 More Minutes by The Rentals makes me think like, Oh my god, I need to make a record like this.
Jack: I think we're all really inspired by the music we listened to when we were kids, we all listen to some form of garage rock probably because we all grew up playing some people would say punk music but that's how we grew up, like playing pop and garage music.
Nate: Yeah I think that we all grew up as nerdy super music fans within the scene at the time we were growing up which was ages ago.
At this time, acoustic pop punker Nevershoutnever! started playing on the stage we were talking behind.
Jack: [to me] is this bad?
Nate: I mean, that's a matter of opinion.
Andrew: Oh, ouch!
Nate: [sarcastically] I think it's just great. No, I think for us that we've been in music long enough and we all love the music we've grown up on, so let's just take whatever we've done through the years and combine it with kind of a love that we had when we were kids.
Jack: You have to recognize if you come from somewhere special too. I grew up in New Jersey, something was happening there, he grew up in Arizona, something was probably happening there, where Andrew was growing up something was happening too right? When you grow up and you hear stories of DC in the 80's or San Francisco in the 60's or Manchester in the 70's and if you can find that where you're from you want to bring that to the rest of the world. And we all try to find that where we're from. Well at least I do.

How do you think you've grown since you've been in the music industry?
Nate: We've grown. We've had some come ups. I think it's just ever-changing, what we do all the time, I think that every single day we find something new. Like playing something like this.
Me: Yeah I bet you're excited to play Bamboozle.
Nate: I think we're excited to do anything if people care. And if they don't we'll find a way to beat them over the head.
How do you think your set went today?
Andrew: Good. It felt really good to play. I don't know, I was so sweaty I couldn't really function.
Nate: I felt good, I was very...the adrenaline was going, like last night I felt like I didn't have a voice, this morning I woke up and didn't have a voice but I got up on stage and felt good because...it just was what it was: a whole bunch of sweaty people, whether it be on the stage or out in the crowd.
Andrew: It kind of felt, there was a moment on stage where everybody was singing along and it felt very much like a video you watch of Green Day or Metallica or like Queen or something, you see a wall of people and they're all singing along. There was like a brief glimmer of that for me. That made it very exciting.
Jack: Our Live Aid!
Nate: Yeah that was our Live Aid moment.
Jack: That was our Live Aid. That was it except it benefited no one.
Andrew: It benefited the vendors.
Nate: It benefited the vendors of New Jersey.

So you just released a live EP recorded at Fingerprints, how was that experience?
Andrew: We didn't know.
Nate: Yeah we knew nothing. We knew that it was release week, we knew that we were in very high spirits and we were also run to the bone continuously doing shows like that and we were surprised at every single show because there were people in store like, there would be a crowd of people watching us. We thought that every single thing we were gonna do was us sitting at a table, someone coming up to us and being like, Where's the new Ghostface Killah record? and we'd have to be like I think it's in hip hop. You know? But we ended up playing
Jack: Headline shows that week. So at that time we didn't know if 1 person or 500 people were gonna come.
Andrew: Yeah but simultaneously we were like hitting our stride and playing together and really figuring out how to do it. So that show came in a nice moment of being very very comfortable.
Nate: Yeah and so we got to Fingerprints, there was a line out the door, which was shocking, and they asked us if they could record it and the rest..
Jack: And then they released it!
Nate: And the rest is history.
Andrew: And they gave us free pizza after too.
Jack: I just remember you [Andrew] called me and asked, What do you want to be on the cover? and I think you suggested astronaut, and I was like Cool! Astronaut! So then I started thinking, you might be an indian, you [Nate] might be a cop or something. So we get the art and it's Andrew and Nate and me as an astronaut.
Andrew: It works. I think it looks cooler that way.
Jack: It was very surprising to get back. It was like I was the only astronaut.
Andrew: You're kind of a standby member anyway.
Jack: It kind of makes sense. And I'm short. In the picture.

What are your plans for right now?
Nate: Like literally right now?
Andrew: Watch Ke$ha. Who's on the other stage?
Nate: I don't know, I really want to watch Ke$ha but I don't.
Andrew: Attempt to stop sweating.
Nate: Well I haven't seen a car accident in like 2 months. I saw her two days ago, that was not a train wreck.
Andrew: It was incredible.
Nate: That was like a hummingbird mating with a camel.
Jack: [sarcastically] Yeah I've heard that before.
Me: I'll try to picture that.
Nate: You can't picture it, just know that in the end the camel and the hummingbird love each other.
Me: Yesterday at her set, you know the Six Flags guy, the old one? For the first 10 minutes he was just onstage by himself dancing to Poker Face.
Andrew: That's so cool.
Nate: That's disgusting.
Andrew: The best. I think she's a genius, I actually do.
Jack: She might be onto something. No, for real. She's like offending everyone and she sucks so bad but now maybe not. She's like Lady Gaga.
Andrew: Yeah she's the real deal. She's a performance artist of the highest degree.
Nate: Jack's gonna barf, so...3, 2, 1. No, that's our near future, is watching Ke$ha.
Andrew: Yeah she's incredible.
Nate: I disagree but she's incredible in the worst way.
Jack: I think that everybody can agree that when Ke$ha's performing, you take it one day at a time.
Nate: Yeah and then we'll head on tour with Paramore and they do it consistently and really well.
Jack: Is it Keisha?
Nate: No it's K dollar sign ha. K e dollar sign ha.

Is there anything else you want to tell our readers?
Jack: Stay away from the clap, Jimmy Dugan. [to me] You know what that is?!
Me: Yeah.
Jack: Thank you! Do you guys? A League of Their Own? Ah, I was positive I was gonna get you guys on that.
Nate: I haven't watched that in years.
Andrew: Sorry.
Nate: So you're saying our [Jack's and his] League of Their Own is Ke$ha and your [Andrew's] Ke$ha is A League of Their Own?
Andrew: Yes. All I remember is a scene where Tom Hanks says that the umpire looks like a penis with a little hat on and I remember thinking that was really funny.
Jack: Well Tom Hanks is Jimmy Dugan and a kid runs up to him and says Stay away from the clap Jimmy Dugan. Thanks!
Nate: If I'm going to have to quote the movie as a last thing to say, the only thing I remember is There's no crying in baseball. I don't remember anything else.
Jack: Really? I bet if I sang the song you would sing it with me.
Nate: I don't remember that.
Jack: We come from cities... You know it you're just not singing it.
Nate: I swear I don't remember it.
Jack: I'll just say one last thing on that, the line in the song is We're not the kind of girls that would need an alibi. That's their anthem.
Nate: That's very Ke$ha.
Andrew: Yeah. So we've come full circle.
Nate: Glad we could spend the day talking about Ke$ha. K-e-i dollar sign ha.
Me: You keep spelling it wrong.
Andrew: No i.
Nate: Oh, so it's like Ke dollar sign ha.
Andrew: I actually think her last name is Sebert.
Me: It is.
Nate: Sebert? Is she Jewish?
Jack: Oh god. God no.
Andrew: She's the best.
Nate: She's a beast. I'm wearing this accessory [a coiled paperclip] on my sunglasses in her honor.

See what I mean? Awesome guys. -hanna kasper
