As tributes to Levon Helm
have been flooding in over the past couple of weeks, bands have been doing their best renditions of classics by The Band. Yesterday, almighty king of New Jersey, Bruce Springsteen
, released his tribute to the late, great drummer by covering "The Weight." The song rules, and it makes sense: Springsteen was a direct descendant of Helm's musical style, beginning his career at the same time The Band was putting out some of their best work. Also, his nickname is "The Boss" so what else could you expect?
Watch as Bruce guides the Newark crowd through a sing-along version of "The Weight." Very little gets in the way of Springsteen and this song, with just a little backing music at first. Then, the whole band kicks in, with drums and horns filling out the ballad. The Boss belts out the verses with the same hearty bellow that Helm was so well known for. The ending is sure to give you some serious chills. Watch the video below, and check out our review of Bruce's newest album, Wrecking Ball.
