This week's excellent collection of old and new is curated by Bad Veins
, an electro-pop duo from Cincinnati. Their new album, The Mess We've Made
, is out now on Modern Outsider Records.
New! Listen to (most of) the mixtape on Spotify!
These songs are all by friends with whom we've shared a stage. Seeing them all perform day after day, tour after tour, is one of the greatest joys of being a performing artist, and I'm sure will be what I keep with me for the rest of my life. I purposely skipped over the more successful bands like Two Door Cinema Club or Frightened Rabbit, whom I love but certainly need no introduction from me.
1. "Stand In Your Shoes" - Lovelikefire - Stand In Your Shoes
I remember driving through the Mojave Desert last year listening to their full length "Tear Ourselves Away" and getting serious goosebumps, and it really makes me sick for the future that they aren't massively successful.
2. "I Know" - Lightning Love - Girls Who Look Like Me
Leah Diehl from Lightning Love is one of my favorite songwriters, and their new song "I Know" on the Girls Who Look Like Me
EP is an instant classic in my universe.
3. "Battle of the Gods" - Tristen - Charlatans at the Golden Gate
Speaking of favorite songwriters, Tristen is definitely on my short list, consistently making me feel like a chump in comparison.
4. "For All Your Sins" - The Dig - Electric Toys
I remember raising my eyebrows with pleasant surprise the first time I listened to this song, and even as i listen now, I find it easy to allow myself to sink in and get the chills.
5. "Bite Your Lip" - New Cassettes - Winterhead
To be perfectly honest, my favorite song by these guys "We Fell to Earth" isn't out yet (set to be on their next record?), but in the meantime, the world has the great album "Winterhead" including this super catchy pop jam to enjoy.
6. "In Circles" - Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary
From their album, Diary
- the version of this song on the live album is somehow even better...
7. "Bankrupt on Selling" - Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West
One of the best lines ever: "Well, I'll go to college and I'll learn some big words and I'll talk real loud, goddamn right I'll be heard! And you'll remember the guy who said all those bigs words he must've learned in college".
8. "On a Rope" - Rocket From The Crypt - Scream Dracula Scream
A punk band with some of the best Pop tendencies ever-- just wait until the chorus kicks in...
9. "Broken Chairs" - Built To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret
I saw them close with this song while I was still in high school-- 20 minute version where the whole band swapped out instruments with the opening act halfway through the end solo...without missing a single note (or beat).
10. "Raining Blood" - Slayer - Reign In Blood
I just want people to know that I'm no sissy...the most bloodied audience I've seen at any concert EVER.
Check out Bad Veins on tour.
