LCD Soundsystem played four headlining shows in a row at Terminal 5. This didn't seem out of the ordinary at all; on the contrary, James Murphy has established his place at the top of the DFA dynasty, and his latest album This Is Happening, has already locked down both critical acclaim and rabid fandom.
I went to the Friday show. If you didn't know how old Murphy was, watching him flaunt it on that stage would have left the impression that he was a much younger man than in reality. The band played for an hour and a half, spanning the LCD discograpy and covering nearly every base &mdash save for my own selfish wishes of "North American Scum". But that didn't stop this show from being the best of the week, if not the event of the spring (besides The National shows). "Someone Great" was great. "I Can Change" was banging. And almost every song started with a moshing frenzy of drunk, crazed fan recognition, launching the place in party mode again and again. Great stuff.
if I could have changed one thing, it would be Murphy's insistence on always ending with "New York I Love You", even if he did switch it up into "Empire State of Mind", which is another song I find bloated and overrated. Sure it's thematically fitting, we're in New York, giggles, etc. But it always seems to bring the crowd down and force a pseudo mass exodus, many of whom missed the whole "Empire" bit to begin with. But people really like both these songs, and did I mention there were so many balloons! That took care of everything.
This was a Best Of Show. SURETAINLY. This Is Happening is out now. -joe
