British big-band (in a small package) The Heavy live and breathe funk-- as evidenced by our experiences with them, anyway. Back for more with their new record The Glorious Dead, the band ventured to Columbus, Georgia for some good old fashioned American southern-sound. Claiming a more "Gothic" take (that's Southern Gothic, not Hot Topic-Gothic), the band enlisted things like church-trained singers to give their horns a bit of soul coloring, and first single "What Makes A Good Man?" suggests it's working.

The Glorious Dead is out 8/21 via Counter Records/Ninja Tune.

Watch The Heavy ripping up a classic at Le Poisson Rouge.
