Suckers have a way of getting into your head and staying there a helpful quality for any new band trying to burst out of the teeming Brooklyn indie rock scene. Their lazily anthemic song "It Gets Your Body Movin'" has already nabbed a coveted spot on Pitchfork's Best New Music, not to mention the attention of Yeasayer's Anand Wilder (who produced their EP, along with Chris Moore of TV on the Radio and Yeah Yeah Yeahs fame).
Their forays into neon and neo-psychedelia have drawn a barrage of MGMT comparisons; they're even sharing a stage at the Prospect Park Bandshell in July. But that's where the similarity ends. Suckers have traded the synth-pop bells and whistles for building harmonies, group chants, and deeper bass lines.
Sure they may look spacey in their new video for "Easy Chairs", but we're giving them the benefit of doubt. Maybe they're just mesmerized by the cascade of armchairs hurtling past them through hyperspace. The video plays like a grainy sci-fi movie on an old TV set which just can't get the colors quite right. The song plays like it's going to be everywhere this summer. So get them wayfarers on, don't be a sucker, and take a look. -
