1. "Rich Kids Blues" - Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes
Have a major girl crush on her at the moment and a major song crush on this tune!
2. "Hurry Hurry" - Jessie Baylin - Single
I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the gorgeous Ms. Baylin's upcoming release Grand St.
and this was a standout track for me. Her voice is iconic. Everyone in the world should know about her!
3. "Barton Hollow" - The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow
This gal and girl are taking over the world and I couldn't be happier about it!
4. "Helplessness Blues" - Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
Because they are all that and a bag of books.
5. "Where Will I Be" - Emmylou Harris - Wrecking Back
An oldie but a goodie and a perfect driving companion for the Ohio turnpike.
6. "Single Girls" - Laura Jansen - Single
She does the best NZ accent of any non-New Zealander I've ever met, and she ain't bad at music either!
7. "Is There A Ghost" - Band Of Horses - Crease To Begin
This is a dangerous song to have on the road because when the rock kicks in halfway through, it is nearly impossible not to drive faster and play drums on the steering wheel and sing along. Watch out for the Highway Patrol. You've been warned.
8. "Straight To Hell" - The Clash - Combat Rock
The Clash was a game changer for me when I was growing up. The combination of amazing melodies, world music influence, and political ideas set the stage for a lot of bands to come. When a buddy of mine got married, we listened to this rolling down a country road on the way to the wedding site, and I will never forget that moment.
9. "You Get What You Give" - New Radicals - Maybe You've Been Brainwashed...
To me, this is one of the most perfect pop songs of the last 20 years. There's a nice bit of youthful rebellion and hope that you can do anything. Proof that pop isn't always a bad word.
10. "Space Age Love Song" - A Flock Of Seagulls - A Flock Of Segulls
For a band that is known mostly for their haircuts, these guys had some amazing tunes. The momentum of the delay guitar in this track was born for the car stereo. It's what falling in love on Mars must sound like, if you're into that kind of thing. The title really says it all.
11. "Flume (Bon Iver Cover)" - Peter Gabriel - Scratch My Back
This one is for the night drives and headlights on the pavement. A quiet intensity that, in my mind, eclipses the original (and brilliant) Bon Iver version of the song. I'm a sucker for Gabriel's voice. When he hits that line "Only love is all maroon," my heart falls out of my chest, and I feel instant longing for whomever I miss at the moment.
12. "Blanket" - Autolux - Future Perfect
If I could have a theme song when I walk into a party, this would be it, mostly because the song is infinitely cooler than I am. The Sonic Youth-inspired guitars and snap of the snare (and whole drum part, really) might be what international assassins listen to before they head out at night for work.
BONUS TRACK: "Something In The Water" - Brooke Fraser
