Although the streets were saturated with families during the Hoboken Arts and Music Festival, the highlight of May 1st occurred after the common folks' timely, dusk retreat. On Sunday evening, Maxwell's secretive, yet legendary, back-room stage welcomed
The Thermals and
Dinowalrus. With a capacity to hold 200 guests (that's including the separate bar/restaurant), Maxwell's is one of the NYC-area's most intimate performing settings. Though the square footage only permitted a jammed crowd of 50, The Thermals showed little restraint, cranking it up to 11.
They delivered a gratifying setlist of fan favorites, including songs of their latest album
Personal Life (2010). While word spread of the news concerning the death of Osama Bin Laden, few audience members vacated to the bar for President Obama's historic announcement. Where was I when I heard Bin Laden bit the dust? You know, just hanging out with Hutch Harris.
The Thermals are embarking on a summer tour with Matt & Kim at the end of this month, and will be performing in July at the
Bell House before heading to Europe. They have also added May 5 performance at
Le Poisson Rouge.
