Everyone loves a good underground artist. So when Spin's
underground artist of the year for 2007 showed up at the Bishop Allen
show the other night, I was pretty pleased. And upon listening to some of their new material, I was thinking: these guys should probably rise above sea level.
The band grew up together in Detroit, and thus have a pretty tight sound that is years in the making. Though they went their separate ways for school, they came back together to form The Silent Years
, a band that kind of sounds like A Brief Smile
, with less ambient in-between tracks (but still plenty of ambience to go around). The variety of instruments used in the songs add a really cool aesthetic to the music, which almost seem to travel through space and time as they roll on.
The band is currently on tour. Pick up their debut self titled and be sure to keep an ear out for the new record, The Globe
, which drops on August 12th.
