There is something really illustrious about sunny California pop, and
The Morning Benders are all about it. If the
Beach Boys gave birth to
The Shins, and gave them some guitars and a tambourine, this would be the end product. Toe tapping jams with a twinge of
Rooney, and solid song writing make
Talking Through Tin Cans (released May 6th) well worth picking up.
Recently featured on
Spin,
Chris Chu (vocals/guitar),
Joe Ferrell (guitar/Rhodes),
Julian Harmon (drums), and
Tim Or (bass) come straight out of Berkley toting beach bum harmonies and jostling guitars, the perfect soundtrack both for a day of surfing and/or a thunderstorm. "Boarded Doors" is on permanent repeat in my head. And if a brand new album wasn't enough, they've got a nice summer tour lined up with the
The Kooks, even playing a show with everyone's favorite upper west coasters,
Death Cab For Cutie. Give the Benders a listen, and make sure to check them out when they come to town.
