The existence of folk-pop is a strange phenomena. And, when I say folk-pop, I don't mean folk music that happens to include a catchy chorus. "Mrs. Robinson" is a folk song that happened to be a massive pop hit. Folk-pop explicitly utilizes pop structures and sounds in a folk environment, and "Restless by Tumbleweed Wanderers
is a shining example of what folk-pop should look like.
We're premiering the tune today, and it's a vibrant pop sing-along fused to classic, rootsy American sounds. It reminds me of one of the last Bruce Springsteen records, Wrecking Ball
, in that regard. But, there's enough of a slight rock edge to the song to keep it from ever entering the world of twee-folk-pop (not that there's anything wrong with that genre; I f***ing love The Weepies). These Oakland, California folk-poppers earned their spot in your listening rotation today.
