Considering that Justin Vernon contributed to both of Kanye West's last two albums or the fact that there were moments on
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy that read more as indie pop than hip-hop, it should be no surprise when indie rockers start to cover Ye's biggest hits. Brooklyn freak folk artists
Oberhofer released a cover of Yeezy's "Runaway" for Record Store Day, and it's made its way online. If you think covers should sound a lot like the original, you'll probably dislike this version because it goes for a very distinct, unique approach, and that's part of what I really enjoy about it. Embracing some noise pop conventions, Oberhofer's take on one of the best tracks of 2010 (I still can't decide whether it or Ariel Pink's "Round and Round" was better) sounds like it could have fit right in on
Merriweather Post Pavilion. The only part of the original that I'm missing is the awesome vocoder solo. Other than that, Oberhofer did Kanye justice.
