Few musicians take the kind of sonic leaps of faith Sarah Jaffe has made with her new album, The Body Wins. Though her roots dig into more country folk foundation (that's the kind of top soil songs like "Clementine" and "Pretender, Pt. 1" were nurtured in), the Texan songwriter's work is in full blown, maturation mode at this point. The Way Sound Leaves a Room hinted at the shift, with Jaffe's trusted acoustics ricocheting around a slew of programmed beats, nifty samples, and various synthetic elements. Her newest release The Body Wins yields Jaffe's most unexpected fruit to dateher fascination with a busier sound and pawn shop rhythms providing the most jarring new aural characteristics. Part of the reason for the full and fleshy arrangements can be attributed to fellow Texan John Congelton. But mostly, we hear/see Jaffe as the main proponent for the dramatically new sound.
