, AKA Valerie Teicher, has released two EPs before - 2013's Saudade
and 2015's Verde
- but she was just testing the waters. Compared to the album she has just released, they were merely splashes of experimentation. Now, Teicher is out with her most intimate, introspective piece of work to date, her debut full-length, Crawl Space.
As if the title wasn't enough, there's a lot of imagery that symbolizes the artist facing her fears throughout the album. For instance, the intense cover, which features a live tarantula walking on her face (yes, it's real). Audio clips recorded by Teicher when she was a little girl are scattered throughout the record - in the beginning on "way to record," she, literally, explains how to record. On "bad singer," she admits, "I'm a bad singer. Can't do anything well. Think I sing so great, but I really never do anything right. I just hope one day I can be like Britney Spears..." and on "bad girl" she continues, "I just want you to hear this, everybody else in the world: I'm a bad singer. I confess it." Of course she was insecure about her voice, but her passion was still evident in the recordings. The song "How Far" explores an abusive relationship where both people take advantage of each other's weaknesses, and Teicher is left to question how far can two people go until they both break.
Another track, "Como Si," is written in Spanish. Before attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, she was mainly living between Bogota and Vancouver, so the different language helps her go back to her roots - another way to explore her true identity. "Keep Running" and "Justify" feature Teicher's chilling falsetto and powerful melodies layered over seductive churning beats. Apparently she's not actually an enormous Britney Spears fan, although it may seem like it after listening to the record, but she sure is channeling her inner pop star... And it's working wonders. Teicher should face her fears more often, because when she pushes her personal boundaries and lets down her wall, we're left with an intimate glimpse into a very compelling mind.
