R.E.M. continue their project of artfully expressive music videos to accompany each song off of their newest album, Collapse Into Now, with latest track "Every Day Is Yours To Win". The elegance and melodic beauty of the song is an extreme contrast compared to the imagery provided in the music video. Most of the adaption appears to be comprised of low-quality webcam-captured clips, which display images that are quite strange, sometimes bordering on uncomfortable. The connecting thread between the track and the video seems to be centered around the melancholy tone belonging to both the song and these clips. While it is definitely an odd pairing otherwise, I will say that I did enjoy the magic trick with the floating card.
If you have an irrational fear of birds fluttering around inside your house, I definitely would not recommend watching this. But if you enjoy a taste for the artfully abstract, then I'm sure the visual translations of "Every Day Is Yours To Win" will be appreciated. The theme seems to encompass the conflicting struggles of identity, loneliness, expression, and self confidence, which is a commendable task. Once you get over the various absurdities (and fear of birds), the video definitely provides a touching expression of these ideas.
