  • A Potential New Avalanches Mixtape
For a band that has only released one album (which was way back in 2000), the Avalanches have an almost ridiculously loyal following (of which I must admit I'm a part of). Their album, Since I Left You, is probably the apex of sampling music in terms of scope, ambition, and, most importantly, quality. We brought you a report that Danny Brown, Ariel Pink, and others were collaborating on the long-awaited second Avalanches album though there still hasn't been any new music actually released from the group in over a decade. Finally, there may actually be new music from the band. As broke by Pitchfork, the Avalanches used their twitter to promote a new mixtape which they say "may or may not" really be them.

Posted under the name Henry Chinaski (which is in and of itself a reference to transgressive fiction icon Charles Bukowski) on the mixtape sharing site Pinchy and Friends which was made by Tom Kuntz who directed the video for the song above, he mixtape, Sleepy Bedtime Mix for Young Ones, is good. It's really good. I've listened to nearly the entire thing today (it's surprisingly lengthy), and while it couldn't be any more different from Since I Left You which focused more on danceable beats among the whirlwind of samples, this new tape finds a more mature the Avalanches (if it's them) tackling some of the more sonic and ambient elements of modern music, and once again, they've done a hell of a job. If this is a taste of their new album, they've now made waiting even more painful. You can listen to the new mixtape here. Enjoy.
