M83 appeared on Jimmy Kimmel last night to perform two totally unhinged and unapologetically 80's-throwback tracks off of this year's Junk. Oh yeah, and Anthony Gonzalez was donned in an eerily and hilariously well-done Teen Wolf costume, which had a really hilarious and awkward juxtaposition next to his bandmates. He was totally wild and in-character throughout the two-song setlist; after all, it's not every day that your 80's throwback vibe is fronted by a werewolf.
As the vocoder mushed his voice in some bizarre and tacky ways, it was hard to look away from a really stellar and captivating performance that perfectly captured the sweeping synth sounds that drove the musical decade. That energy was channeled perfectly in sheer old-school electronica. There was an elegant simplicity in "Do It, Try It" that Gonzalez and bandmates could transform live to captivate and entrance with their huge array of soundscapes.
The next track, "Go," offered quite a lot of energy as well, though it was even more mellowed out and spacier. The several countdowns didn't feel cliche at all during the wild instrumental moments, and the new material is just as groovy as ever in a live setting. It's fair to say that M83 brings the decade back to life like few others.
