Relationships are tough. They bring a lot of unreasonable and unattainable expectations into our lives about the ways that our partners can and can not "complete" us -- which may be the single most damaging idea in romantic history. And while there are plenty of love songs about the beauty and pleasure of love, the best love songs tackle the more realistic angles of romance. "House of Sticks," whose video we're premiering, by Stein Sang
is one of those songs with a mature take on the broken expectations of romance.
The video follows the band as they retreat to the countryside to be alone in their couplehood. It starts with an idealized hope that this escape will make their relationship whole but it isn't long before isolation and a lack of communication tear the relationship apart, and the fires (both metaphorical and literal) of their new life begin to consume them. Paired with a low-key but catchy folk tune, "House of Sticks" is a perfect fit for anyone who understands that there's more to making a relationship work than simply being with your partner.
