Out and About: Coachella Weekend 2, Day Two

Day two didn't hold many surprises-- but we expected it to be golden, and were not disappointed. A stretch including The Shins, Feist, Bon Iver, and Radiohead? Guaranteed good time, and that's not even including stellar outings from Grace Potter, Azealia Banks, tUnE-yArDs, and what seems like a million other things. The festival seemed twice as crowded as Friday, but still not quite packed to the brim, partly thanks to the two weekend split, and to the fact that it's almost two different festivals I've dubbed "Coolchella" and "Brochella," one being the main stage/outdoor stage "cool" bands (Bonny Bear, Thom Yorke's dance moves, etc.) and the Sahara tent, packed with sweaty, rolling kids and a constant thumping. Whose cuisine will reign supreme in Coachella stadium? STAY TUNED FOR THE FULL REPORT. Today they kind of mix, with Justice taking the big stage...

Bon Iver had the tightest set yesterday, with his band cranking out impeccable renditions of the band's self-titled (Grammy award winning) album. Radiohead seemed at ease, frolicking through a mostly unique set, switching it up from last week, we got "Kid A" and "Karma Police," the latter of which saw the audience chanting the chorus long after the band was done. It was one of those moments-- a perfect vibe-- like it was written into the script of the weekend.

Surprise of the day: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, who I checked out on a whim-- and was flattened by their musicianship, and Grace's voice. I've got plenty of pictures of all of the shows I hit up, minus Jeff Mangum (who asked that no photos be taken from the pit during his set). With nothing but a guitar and twenty-year old songs, Mangum was definitely only for hardcore fans. Many enjoyed his set from the beer garden, well out of range of the die-hards crying like babies in the front row, which I'll admit, I almost did being two-feet from Yorke as the band launched into "15 Step." And I'm sure plenty of people were bawling in the Sahara tent, but that's another story entirely. One that I'll hopefully be experiencing today.

Don't forget your sunscreen, we've got one more to go. At The Drive-In? Gotye? Justice? Will The Weeknd suck? Will Tupac rise again tonight? Who will join him? How many different states of mind will be occupied? We'll see you in the beer garden.
