Ah, Coachella. What was once a lone, lost weekend of over indulgence in all the wrong things has now blossomed into...two lost weekends of over indulgence in all the wrong things. It's the kind of musical orgy even Bacchus would envy, which means we can pretty much be forgiven for the slight pangs of jealousy for our managing editor Joe, who is currently somewhere in the middle of the Mojave, chasing down the big Coachella story. It's OK though. Faithful interns Don and Malcolm have curated our latest batch of Friday jams. So who needs Coachella? We don't! To The Mixtape!
1. "Holy Men" - Beware of Darkness - Howl EP
We've premiered three tracks from this L.A. rock band this week, and out of the three, "Holy Men" stood out as the best definition of their hyperliterate garage-rock.
2. "Light + Space" - Laurel Halo - Quarantine
Laurel Halo is having a good month releasing tunes either as Laurel Halo or King Felix, and "Light + Space" has been a stand-out ambient pop track of the spring.
3. "Bird on the Buffalo" - Angus Stone - Bird on the Buffalo [Single]
Where have all the good American folk musicians gone? Leave it to the Europeans (Laura Marling, Mumford, First Aid Kit) and some upstart Aussies to embarrass us Yanks. "Bird on the Buffalo" is one of the strongest folk tunes of the year, and Angus Stone continues to impress.
4. "Heaven" - The Walkmen - Heaven
Even more than synth-pop or brostep, slickpop is the fad genre of the winter and spring of 2012, and the Walkmen completely cleared the room with their jangling and emotional "Heaven."
5. "Dream Baby Dream" - Neneh Cherry and the Thing - Dream Baby Dream [Single]
This was the comeback story no one could have possibly expected. Still, Neneh Cherry's cover of Suicide's "Dream Baby Dream" is a knock-out, jazzy stunner.
6. "Lazuli" - Beach House - Bloom
"Lazuli" is Beach House's second release from the upcoming Bloom
, and as with "Myth," everything falls into place to make this a beautiful anthem. Beach House are definitely the best at doing Beach House.
7. "Night and Day" - Hot Chip - In Our Heads
This brand new track from the upcoming In Our Heads
proves that Hot Chip is back, dark, and dirtier than ever. All hail the Chip!
8. "Girl, You're So Weird" - Flaming Lips & New Fumes - Flaming Lips & Heady Fwends
Putting the naked women aside, this song totally rules on its own.
9. "Conditioning" - Cadence Weapon - Hope in Dirt City
Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon's Hope in Dirt City
is out May 29. Here's to hoping that the whole album is as solid as this track.
10. "Rise to the Sun" - Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls
Turns out, this album is still awesome all the way through, even on the twentieth spin.
