The first quarter (and a half by now) of 2012 has been a great period for the music video as avant-garde short film. The Shins turned "Simple Song" into a miniature Wes Anderson film. Spiritualized's "Hey Jane" was a visceral look at the life of transgendered men in America. And most recently, School of Seven Bells (or rather, one of their fans) turned their track "Reappear" into a Michael Mann-esque look at being young, in love, and in the city. Brooklyn dance-punk mainstays Liars have a new music video to add to the list of those wonderfully compelling (and in this case, horrifically disturbing) short films. The video for "No. 1 Against the Rush" has a serial killler abducting people in his obvious rapist van and then wrapping them in plastic to (I assume) be disposed of/killed somewhere else. It's as creepy as it sounds and the sparse electronica at the core of the song helps to make it even more unsettling.
