  • Stream: Laurel Halo
Brooklyn electronic artist Laurel Halo is preparing her first release for Hyperdub, Quarantine. From the album is a new track "Light + Space," which sounds a lot like the abstract, artistic images the title conjures. Laurel's voice stands at the center of the swelling synths and triggered drums, remaining fairly uneffected. In an interview with Fact Magazine, she explained, "It was tempting to use autotune but I decided against it because there's this brutal, sensual ugliness in the vocals uncorrected, and painfully human vocals made sense for this record." The intention comes across loud and clear for Laurel Halo, and her voice is more than capable of sustaining a song without the usual dose of reverb soak.

According to the interview, Quarantine took eight months to record and was whittled down from 30 demos. The picture girls hacking themselves to pieces up top is the album cover for Laurel Halo's new album, it's Harakiri Schoolgirls 2002 by Makoto Aida in case you were wondering, I know I was. Quarantine is out 6/5 in the U.S. and a week earlier in the U.K.
