I recently gave Carly Rae Jepsen's
latest track "I Really Like You" a lukewarm review
, but now that it has some awesome visual context, I'm changing my tune slightly. The video is infectiously positive and playful, and with the help of some mega-star firepower, pleases on all fronts. I still find the song to be overwhelmingly cheesy and an underwhelming follow up to "Call Me Maybe," but Tom Hanks' unexpected performance really takes the edge off.
From the opening frame, you fall in love with Hanks and his jovial, Disney-esque positivity as he sleepily prepares for his day. He has some years on him, but he appears intensely spry and super eager to participate in the pop shenanigans that await. His lip-syncing is spot on, and paired with Jepsen's saccharine vocal tone, makes for a hilarious visual. This guy's won two oscars for goodness' sake, and it seems as if he took this latest role just as seriously as he took Forest Gump
I would have loved to hear the pitch from Jepsen's manager when explaining the idea to Hanks' camp. I'd imagine that it wasn't an easy sell, but hey, you never know. The man hasn't been in a blockbuster for quite sometime so maybe he just really wanted some work. Whatever the case is, he faithfully injected his signature facial expressions and movements into the piece to great effect.
Hanks ushers the viewer all the way through the climactic final dance number where one Justin Bieber
appears stage left, joining in the frivolity with miraculously little douche-baggery. You must be thinking, "Biebs not seeming douchy? Has hell frozen over?!" But once again, it can be attributed to Hanks' influence. His veteran status and willingness to go all out for a silly pop song overshadows everything else and makes for great entertainment. I'll spare you the "really really really" line, and just say that Tom Hanks makes this a great music video.
Check it out below, and don't be afraid to get up and dance uncontrollably when the chorus hits.
!CAUTION! Feeling strange affection for the Beibster? Never forget...
