Sharon Van Etten
's album-to-album evolution as a musician is a compelling one to follow. The quiet, shy, coffeehouse poet we first met five years ago on Because I Was in Love
became a much louder, more confident musician on Tramp
; an album that provided a breakout of sorts for the Brooklyn musician. What played as sadness became anger and eventual new beginnings, with her career flourishing in the process. Now, two years after the take off, Van Etten returns with a new album, Are We There
on May 27th. If the first track to emerge from the collection is any indication, the answer to such a question is a emphatic "yes"; "Taking Chances" is a surprisingly seductive production, dripping with a sweaty, laid-back groove and Sharon's lovely, lilting vocals. Anyone else think it's kind of hot in here?
