The excitement on line outside Webster Hall last week would be indicative of the show to come. A bill that included the
Harlem Shakes,
Born Ruffians, and
tokyopoliceclub drew the electrified, sold out audience to the venue, and for their part, the bands would not disappoint...especially TPC.
Cranking out a collection of classics from last year's pristine full-length debut
Elephant Shell, TPC rolled through back to back tunes that offered a real sense of nostalgia for the capacity crowd. Of note were "Juno" and "Tessellate"; both of which were grabbing in their variance from the LP versions.
New tracks also enlivened the crowd...especially a remixed rendition of "Breakneck Speed". Of special note was an encore performance of "Spark"; a song TPC wrote with the Born Ruffians. Naturally they invited their fellow Canadians out on stage. Finally, TPC closed their set by inviting the Harlem Shakes onstage for a mesmerizing version of the Clash's "Train in Vain".
In the end, Tokyo Police Club are such an engaging presence for the simple fact that they remind their fans of themselves. Really, they're just four guys onstage relishing the opportunity to showcase their craft. Quirky lead singer Dave Monk was also able to capture the audience, singing lyrics to love songs for the hopeless nerd...young and old alike. In the end, the show brought teenagers and 40 year olds to their feet to applaud for three long minutes. As one fan summed it up, "Their lyrics are just honest." -
