I think part of the struggles that the Killers
(and, by proxy, frontman Brandon Flowers
) faced over the last half decade or so was an eventual turning away from the band's shameless 80s dance-pop roots. On various levels, it's easy to hear how badly the Killers were trying to be the next Coldplay when they had mastered their sound right out of the gates with the classic Hot Fuss
. There's experimenting and growing as an artist, and then there's trying too hard to fit in on the radio and losing everything that makes you special as an artist, and that's sadly where the Killers wound up.
Fortunately, Brandon Flowers's latest solo single, "Can't Deny My Love," seems like a "return to your roots" moment for the Killers frontman. It's unvarnished New Wave fun, and Flowers took to The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon
to perform the number, and in his wonderfully throwback outfit, Flowers looked like the lovechild of John Mellencamp and Bon Jovi, and we're actually saying that as a compliment. It's the sort of tongue-in-cheek self-awareness that made tracks like "Mr. Brightside" so beloved, and it's good to know that Flowers hasn't lost his sense of humor. We can't wait for the new record, Desired Effect
, due out 5/19.
