Usually collaborative audio-visual projects don't have a compositional component that can stand alone, and thus deteriorate into nonsensical faux-art as far as the music is concerned (which coincidentally, when said quickly, sounds like "fart"). Not the case when pros like Danger Mouse are involved. The
Dark Night Of The Soul project with revered mindf*ck director David Lynch and alt-rockers Sparklehorse was shelved by EMI last year, much to the dismay of internet trolls who already had the record on their hard drives. The collection of songs is, to say the least, really, really good, and features guest spots with superstars like Casablancas and The Flaming Lips.
At first the group released the 500 page booklet with a blank CD-R, encouraging fans to "do whatever they need to do with it". Now with the untimely death of Sparklehorse frontman Mark Linkous, the collection is set for a tentative summer release. Obviously fanboys (like this guy) are excited at the prospect of a proper release, because these songs rock. And since the dreary subject matter suddenly seems more appropriate to honor the troubled Linkous, who worked on it, the songs somehow carry more weight. Linkous' suicide was just one of several untimely deaths so far this year, and we're hoping that pattern cuts out sometime soon.
Anyway, cue Julian Casablancas (who is on a roll with his latest solo effort, not to mention the buzz/anticipation for Strokes IV) who adds his own particular flair to "Little Girl", a track from the
Dark collection. Look into obtaining the whole collection if you don't already have it, if not for the music than for Lynchs striking photography. More on that on the website. -
