Its looking like
Barsuk Records day. How do I know? Well, this marks my
second post concerning a Barsuk band today. What do you propose we call it? Thats what I thought. Barsuk Day it is
even though, technically,
Death Cab for Cutie can no longer call the indie label home. Course the label still does have plenty invested in their darling Death Cab. Theyre kind of responsible for the bands existence. And they still even handle their vinyl releases
which will apparently be happening again this Spring. On May 13th, Death Cab will release
Narrow Stairs; the follow-up to their somewhat disappointing 05 effort
Plans (though I Will Follow You into the Dark is totally to die for). What does the band have in store this time around? Its mostly a mystery. But listening in on their sprawling new track posted on their
MySpace Page suggest the band will continue their album by album move away from the kind of charming indie pop that roped most of their fans in. Titled I Will Possess Your Heart, the track rambles on to the tune of wispy guitar/piano lines and a rhythm section that sounds as if their just kind of going through the motions. Slowly building bit by patient bit, Ben Gibbard finally chimes in round the 4 and a half minute mark. After that? Well, you should listen to the track.
But I do have to ask
What is with these guys? First they want follow us into the dark? Now they want to possess our heart? Perhaps they are not the polite dudes next door I always presumed them to be.
David Pitz
