, much loved Strokes frontman gone solo artist, has been leaving a trail of breadcrumbs to his new LP. He's starving us, all we've got so far is a sketchy teaser video of Casablancas and The Voidz
practicing in a dark basement and being covered in psychedelic effects. This will be his first solo endeavor since his Phrazes For the Young
, which was released half a decade ago. Last night Casablancas and The Voidz debuted a new song, "Ego" at a secret show in The Handlebar of Pensacola, Florida. Unfortunately, as breadcrumb clues are wont to be, it's a fairly unsatisfying meal as the video of the show is rather muffled.
Regardless, we can catch the drift of where this new album is going and I'm thinking The Voidz are adding a whole new layer of punk to Casablancas' sound. Perhaps he's inheriting sound from Lou Reed/The Velvet Underground and is living out the legacy, a 70s punk revival...oh how long we've waited. Although it's difficult to hear the vocals in this recording over roaring drums and guitar, it's clear that synth won't be an overwhelmingly major component in this album as it was in Phrazes For the Young
. The new album is still missing a title and a release date, but from the looks of it, a tasty album can't be too far away.
