  • late night: nicki minaj
Hip-hop's hottest new thing Nicki Minaj stopped by Jimmy Kimmel last night to perform her latest single "Right Through Me." The performance, while remarkably subdued by Minaj standards, still featured the expected zany costume, hairstyle, and a bit of her trademark face-making.
  • album review: deluka
Glittery synth licks and space-age melodics make Deluka's debut You Are The Night feel like a permanent trip inside a guitar-infused star machine. It's a lot of fun. They could easily soundtrack a video game or two (and maybe they have). But their sound owes its stylization to a different kind of aesthetic. It stems from both their relentless search for old, unwanted synthetic sounds and their dedication to the age-old art of stage presence. The keyboards on the record are all thrift store finds, old and worn down by years of neglect. And the band itself, clad in leather and thick accents, make sure every show is a sugar candy O.D. of rock and roll. Their album plays the exact same way, like a post trick-or-treating rush to the head, or the bodily consequences of consuming an entire bag of pixie sticks.
  • late night: kid cudi
Kid Cudi made an appearance on Conan last night to support the release of his second full-length, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager. While it lacks the all-star backing cast of his last late-night appearance on Jimmy Fallon, this performance of "Revofev" is a good chance to check out some more of his new music live. Be sure to stick it out to the end — Cudi apparently had some extra energy to burn after the show.
  • the facebook hookup: blood red shoes
It's easy to get your blood pumping by illegally racing cars and jumping from high places, but recreating that feeling as a rock and roll duo isn't always a given (especially if you like Cat Stevens and ironic hats). Enter Blood Red Shoes, who take aggressive to the next level with their ultra-propelling tunes. As per our usual deal, leave a comment after they blow your hair back and you can win cool stuff! Details below.
  • win a pair of tickets to see chief
Chief, one of our favorite new acts from 2010 is playing a headlining show at Bowery Ballroom here in New York City. We've got two pairs of tickets to give away and you can throw your name in the hat for the low, low price of an email. As a bonus the winner gets their choice of a CD/LP copy of their debut Modern Rituals. Click on!
  • now playing: blood red shoes
One of the most appealing aspects of any CMJ Music Marathon are those surprises that lie in wait, often from international acts using the festival as their testing grounds/jumping off point for eventual US supremacy. Perhaps the best example of this kind of discovery this past year came from Blood Red Shoes; a fiery, British two-piece who peddled a heap of pent up, cathartic energy during our recent Baeble on the Bowery Showcase. To the giddy delight of critics and fans alike, the band, consisting of guitarist Laura-Mary Carter and drummer Steven Ansell, have spent the last year churning a rather glorious noise in England and across much of mainland Europe with constant touring behind their appropriately titled debut Fire Like This. Their performances this past Fall however represent their first stab at the States.

That fire which BRS refer to on the cover of their album is obviously their own creative intensity, and as our latest concert video can attest, clearly singed and ignited the curiosity of almost everyone in attendance at our showcase. From the moment a blatant, attention calling drone of cymbal and guitar propelled their set into fast forward, the confines of the Bowery Electric was churning with an inquisitive buzz. Who was this band? Why had nobody ever heard of them? The result was a stunned and overwhelmed kind of gathering...a nice place to put any audience hearing a band for the first time. So, if our latest concert release is an introduction to you...well, that almost excites us even more. Consider yourself one of the first on board with a band we have immense expectations for.
  • elizabeth and the catapult announce east coast tour
Following the unfortunate postponement of a run of West Coast dates due to illness, Elizabeth and the Catapult have announced a run of East Coast dates to support their second full-length album, The Other Side of Zero. Since its October 25th release on Verve, the album has won massive critical acclaim from a variety of major news outlets including the Boston Globe and Spin. The tour won't take the group far from their Brooklyn home, but if you're around, you can catch the new tunes live at one of the dates listed after the jump.
  • black lips get shut down at epic atlanta show
Black Lips are known for their rambunctious, drunken shenanigans. So it's not much of a surprise that their show in Atlanta on Saturday night was ridiculous enough to be shut down by local police. But the guys debut six new songs amongst the beer can flinging, and they are all said to be "rowdy rock jams". Rad!
  • mp3: the knife (portable/bodycode remix)
The Knife's "Seeds" has gotten the remix treatment from deep house producer Portable, also known as Bodycode. The remix clocks in at a whopping twelve minutes of hypnotic house beats and low-key, spacey synth lines and trippy vocals. Warning: do not listen when tired.
  • dead confederate cancels show
Today Southern rockers Dead Confederate reported on their Facebook that they would be forced to cancel their Atlanta gig tonight with Minus The Bear due to the unruly world of gear theft. The band was robbed in Atlanta and cannot play without their stuff. Come on, world!
  • wolf parade announce the inevitable hiatus
It seems like every time Wolf Parade finish touring a record the guys take a break to work on their respective side-projects (of which there are many). So when Canada's finest announced at a Toronto gig that it would be their last show for a while, everyone probably took the news with a grain of salt. Dan Boeckner contacted our favorite Wolf Parade fansite and confirmed that the band is now taking an "indefinite hiatus", and according to Pitchfork, Sub Pop also confirms the break. So it goes.
