• now playing: black lips @ mccarren park pool - brooklyn, ny

Gritty guitars, black wayfarers, and...toilet paper? Hardly the typical rock n' roll prescription, but The Black Lips brought their snarling, flower-punk circus to Brooklyn for one hell of a show (which included "5th Black Lip" King Khan singing in a golden Tina Turner dress). However, through all the chaotic excess, the Black Lips offer a surprisingly raw and straightforward garage-punk attack that injects the roll back in rock 'n roll (be sure to watch their performance of "Bad Kids." It's fantastic). Despite the beating summer sun, the result was an intimately poppy and violently fun show that needs to be seen to be believed. We here at Baeble were lucky enough to catch the onstage anarchy for you guys at home. Just watch it. Seriously.
• black lips hit the road

It's not just Black Lips' big week at Baeble. The band is also gearing up to hit the road for a handful of dates. Check out all the details after the jump.
• album review: black lips:: good bad not evil

Good Bad Not Evil is an album for anyone who ever picked up a guitar and had every intention of becoming the next Eric Clapton or Jimi Hendrix, but due to a lack of talent, laziness, ordinariness, etc., shifted their idols to Steve Jones and Johnny Ramone. Good Bad Not Evil is an album for the everyman who still finds fart jokes funny, but fancies themselves intelligent enough to realize its inherent limitations. In doing so, The Black Lips make music fun enough for everyone to love, but genius enough so that only a select few can really appreciate.
• Alive and Kickin': Keep an Eye on Dead Confederate.

These guys sure have been making a lot of noise this past year. After stellar reviews opening for the likes of R.E.M at SXSW, Dead Confederate's full length debut, Wreckingball, was unveiled earlier this month that had one critic on their MySpace page quoted as saying, "It's heavy, it's deep, it's direct... it's Tha Carter III of rock records." Genre crossing praise doesn't get much higher Lil' Wayne (but then again, few things do).
• album review: deerhunter:: microcastle

It can not be denied. The inspirational pull of one Bradford Cox is a rather mighty one. The lanky, Atlanta based musician has spent the better part of the last two years invigorating the passion and enthusiasm of certain ranks of indie music fans; quite a feat considering such a base is often accused of being indifferent, uninspired, and frankly a bit uppity. So how's he done it?
• lukestar shines bright

Out from the woodsy terrain that engulfs Oslo, Norway, emerges one of the freshest breaths of air to come out of pop punk in some time. Mixing your typical pop punk with a large dose of something more organic and evolved, Lukestar will - without a doubt - make an impact on your iTunes most played counter.
• album review: birdmonster:: From the Mountain to the Sea

Back in 2004 Peter Arcuni teamed up with Justin Tenuto, David Klein, and Zach Winter to create what is now Birdmonster. That same year, their self-titled album hit the circuit, and, not long after, was followed up with No Midnight. Through that record the group of Californian musicians gained thorough recognition, jumping on tour to open for bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Tapes N' Tapes, Coldwar Kids and The National.
• the silversun pickups to drop new lp

Pumped full of drums, and hopefully - their patented distorted guitar riffs, The Silversun Pickups have returned with new stuff. Three years after releasing Carnavas, the Los Angelinos are set to release their follow up album - titled Swoon - sometime in 2009. The recording process began mid July and has diligently been worked on throughout their world tour. Hopefully, being in places like Japan and Toronto during the project has had some interesting, new influences on the record.
• deerhunter autographed cymbal sweepstakes

Take a look at beauty that lies in wait after the jump. She's sleek, shiny, 16 inches from edge to edge, and most alluringly autographed by every member of Deerhunter. Even more impressive is the fact that this exclusive piece of memorabilia can be all yours.
• now playing: deerhunter @ mccarren park pool - brooklyn, ny

Oftentimes at live shows, musicians of the indie-rock variety get so caught up in all the strut and swagger that goes along with rock music that they forget to be fun. Deerhunter are not that, as evidenced by their performance here at McCarren Park Pool.
• lucky for us :: the happy hollows to release imaginary ep
The Happy Hollows sure have a lot to be happy about. It seems like 99% of the bands' formation was left completely up to chance. Had L.A. traffic been a bit slower one day, or had a computer never been switched on that night, the Happy Hollows probably never would have even existed. The house was stacked against their favor from the get go, but then again, this L.A. trio doesn't sound like the type to play the odds anyway.

The year was 2005. Unbeknownst to one another, D.C. natives Charlie Mahoney and Chris Hernandez had each transplanted to the west coast to pursue their individual music aspirations. An unlikely encounter in the sunshine state brought forth a bond seeded in hometown familiarity, and the saplings of a future band were rooted. But something was still missing.

Enter the magic of Craigslist. Guitarist and vocalist Sarah Negahdari had been performing solo in the greater Los Angeles area for some time. A chance posting by Mahoney and Hernandez piqued her interest, and a few keystrokes paved the way for a catalytic first meeting, which lead to the eventual fruition of the band we're now lucky enough to call the Happy Hollows.

The impending release of the bands' Imaginary EP (10/21/08) reveals a sensitive and supporting chemistry important to the sound of any three piece outfit. Hernandez's heavy drums add fanfare underneath Mahoney's melodically rooted bass, crafting a sound that is both intricate and absolutely massive. Negahdari's guitar weaves a web of fuzzy arpeggios and sparse, knotty power chords over the whole sound, but it's her breezy, purring vocals that are the real highlight. The comparisons to Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon are more than obvious, but every yelp and doot doot (as heard in tracks like "Tambourine" and "Big Bad Wolf") provides a stark and vulnerable femininity detached from the heaviness of the Pixie-like instrumentation. It's easy, breezy, beautiful, cover-girl easiness over the soundtrack of a battlefield.

As convention has it, this band probably would have never existed. Here at Baeble, we'd like to think that maybe we're the lucky ones after all. - chris gayomali
