When Travis Morrison went and did with The Dismemberment Plan what he threatened to do all along with namesake alone
(um, dismember the band), his highly anticipated solo work failed to pick up where the D.C. art-rock quartet left off. However, word is he quickly moved on from the critical hailstorm he
took for Travisfan, assembled a new band in 05, the HellFighters, and quickly went to work on a new record. But when the songs didnt come, Morrison took a break, and neatly
tucked the HellFighters away in his pocket for another day. That day apparently came in 2006. With the production help from ex-D Plan member Jason Caddell, The Hellfighters finished
recording All Yall at Chicago Recording Company and Studio G in Brooklyn NY.

| There can be any number of ways a band might arrive at the front door of a newly finished, studio album. Where one group might prefer to prepare a handful of signature tunes to rehearse and record the hell out of, another might take a more round about way to arrive at the material. Slide Boston born/Brooklyn bred band, Bishop Allen, into the latter
though their 06 EP project was more of a scattering in every which direction than a brief detour. But, as it turns out, the relentless release schedule was more than just a prolific project to keep the band going. It was the search for an immaculate follow-up to their hooky, pop gem of a debut, Charm School. Witling fifty-eight songs down to a handful (and adding a few previously unreleased tracks), The Broken String (Dead Oceans) colors in the year-long projects lo-fi scribblings with fully detailed arrangement and vivid production. It also reveals why so many have gravitated towards the band over the course of their career. KEEP READING - David Pitz

| Like Bjork, Vashti Bunyan, Coco Rosie, and Joanna Newsome before her, Bat For Lashes Natasha Khans hypnotic dose of the semi-surreal sounds as if it could have drifted along ancient currents from another time
if not a another world all together. Of course, Khan is very much a modern woman, and her world (England) isnt exactly eons away. But damn
the regimental drums, well worn harpsichord, feverishly flurried strings, and trance educing Theremin that couple with Khans mystic set of pipes on Fur and Gold (Caroline) tell a different story. - David Pitz

Having earned themselves a slew of critical chatter for their independently released, Wild Mountain Nation, Portland experi-blazers Blitzen Trapper brought their rousing and rambling sound to a close-to-capacity show in NYC last evening. Always wanting to decipher pandemonium from pretension, the Baeble crew piled into the Mercury Lounge to hear what all the frenzied fuss surrounding the band is all about.
When a young band meanders musical terrain at will, often times they sound lost or searching. But Blitzen Trappers well-informed pull on multiple sonic seams never tears apart the bands performance. Whether wondering what Wowee Zowee might sound like coming out of their own guitars, leaning on the country croon of Crosby Stills, Nash, and Young, grazing in cow punk pastures, or sending accolades to that gloriously grungy past their area of the country is so typically associated with, Blitzen Trapper tie their tunes tight with enthusiastic and slap happy takes on their well worn influences. - David Pitz

| The debut album by A Fine Frenzy - really Alison Sudol, the red-head featured on the cover - follows, in many ways, the tradition of the soulful and slightly world-weary female singer-songwriter. The breathy vocals, the insistent piano, the boozy confessions; they're all here. Yet, it is such formulaic construction that prevents this album from being something truly original. When Moving Units stoked up LA dance floors in 2002 with their home town blend of east coast disco punk, they were met by the kind of good fortune most young bands only dream of ever getting a taste of. With a label deal in their pocket, and a slew of critical acclaim, things looked great for the band
then they abruptly fell apart. The bands label folded, and amongst the collapse came rumors of a break up.
Thankfully, the southern California band decided to forge ahead and navigate the perilous challenges of an industry that did not really know what it was becoming. They also added guitarist Victor Velazquez to round out their sound.
Fortunately, it seems, once again, that it may be Moving Units time. Having recently signed to Metropolis, the band is prepping their sophomore album, Hexes for Exes, for an October 9th release.
In Addition, the band has been hand-picked to open for Smashing Pumpkins at San Franciscos Fillmore Auditorium on Wednesday July 25.
Moving Units Tour Dates:

8/10/07 - House of Blues - Anaheim, CA

Boasting a (somewhat) modest six members, budging Bostons Hallelujah The Hills into the dime a dozen, kitchen collective scene may not seem quite appropriate. But the bands windswept and lofty clamor will garner befitting comparisons to the Arcade Fires and Broken Social Scenes of the world
which is a good thing. I like a bit of excess in my musical faire, and Hallelujah the Hills do just that on their recently released debut Collective Psychosis Begone ( Misra). Rounding out traditional drums, guitar, and bass, Hallelujah dip their songs in drabs of cello, violin, trumpet, and melodica. Top The Hills off with Ryan Walshs megaphone vocals, and the musical surplus is matched with equal parts emotion and intensity. Plus, the band has penned themselves a proper fight song, posted below. - David Pitz

| From the very first banjo strokes, Ongiara invites comparisons to some of the big names of indie folk: Neil Young, Iron & Wine, Nick Drake, and Sufjan Stevens. While this could be considered a somewhat stifling group to work in (whos going to want to try to compete with Neil Young??), the Great Lake Swimmers perform admirably, and manage to present a sound that is distinctly their own. The third album from the Ontario-based band is in no way a departure from their previous two albums, but rather works on developing their sound, to varying degrees of success. Oh yes...another tour...
If any band has enjoyed itself a steadier, quieter fifteen year career than Nada Surf, I hereby challenge you to find them. Formed in 1993, the band scored themselves a rather bizarre, MTV beach house style hit with Popular in 1996, released 2nd album The Proximity Effect in 98, reclaimed their indie cred with 03s Let Go, and tallied critical acclaim with This Weight is a Gift in 2005. Its a stunning career really
And luckily the band has no plans to write an end to it anytime soon. Hitting the road for their first tour since spring of 06, the band will be playing a slew of dates this October and November. The band has tapped poignant singer/songwriter Sea Wolf for support. Full details below: - David Pitz

Living in one of the most overwhelming places on the globe to call home, sometimes it seems almost everyone in NYC has a little black book containing a reliable list of secrets and nuances they have gathered for getting by in the mega-metropolis. Keeping it neatly tucked away for primo occasions, those places to grub on the cheap and entertain on the dime are absolutely necessary for comfy, urban set survival. Leafing through our own guide recently, Baeble stumbled upon one of the citys best kept secrets though they will not remain so for too much longer.
This performance from The Rosewood Thieves highlights exactly why these New Yorkers are steady up and comers in the recently renaissanced, American roots scene. Set in the cozy confines of Pianos, the band capture pieces of down and dirty Lower East Side rock, sun splashed Southern California vibes, and country tinged song craft of Americas heartland. Springsteen, Lennon, The Band, The Replacements, Wilco, and The Strokes
The Rosewood Thieves pull from an impressive pedigree to construct their well-worn sound. Catch the bands enkindling performance here. And dont say we never tipped you on anything! David Pitz

After forming psychedelic rock/downtempo The Beta Band in London, and mere weeks after signing a contract with Parlaphone, Gordon Anderson decided to leave the band and return to Scotland to combat his growing mental illness. After spending nearly a decade in and out of hospitals, recording only sporadically and receiving nearly 150 electro-shock treatments, Anderson went on to join former bandmates John Maclean and Robin Jones in The Aliens. The bands cheery, uptempo psychedelia, found on their debut Astronomy For Dogs, sounds like the flipside to Beta Bands slow, melancholic trip music. Yet it still showcases the members penchant for experimental music with accessible pop elements. Calling from a cottage in the middle of the Scottish countryside, Anderson is friendly, frank and surprisingly at ease with his past. He talked to Baeble about how the mind works with the creative process, dreaming of songs and how religion helped him conquer his demons. KEEP READING - Jason Newman

Baebles lovely little Swedish obsession still hasnt run its course. But really, why should it? Having filmed bands like Peter, Bjorn, and John, Mando Diao, Im From Barcelona (Ok, havent filmed them yet
but we will be.), and now ,Shout Out Louds, the choice music that continues to be imported stateside provides reason upon reason to keep our cameras pointed at the countrys artists.
Set in the makeshift and mirrored, carnavalistic round house, Spiegel World, Shout Out Louds performance on Monday testified that midnight in July is no time to lay low. Aptly named, the modish, Nordic-pop the band delivers feels like a euphoric scream from a lonesome rooftop. Live, precisely delivered songs from 2005s Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (Capitol) and the upcoming Our Ill Wills (Merge) were decidedly crafted with the same arrangement, emotion, and melody as their studio counterparts. As for all those Cure comparisons, look no further than Adam Oleniuss spellbinding voice.
Itll always be a wonder how frozen Swedish studios and practice spaces bare some of the sunniest set music going today. No use mulling it over, however. What matters is, the Shout Out Louds and their prize winning music found Baeble on a sizzling summer evening on the East River.
In addition to the full-length concert, we also interviewed the band and their fans for an upcoming Green Room episode. Keep your eyes on Baeble in the coming weeks for more. David Pitz

Cars dashing by overhead, the East River sitting at my toes, and the New York City skyline slowly flicking on, light by light, in the background
It all makes for a rather handsome setting to catch a show. But when it is a performance from Les Savy Fav, that impeccable ambiance is nearly irrelevant. There is just too much happening on stage to get caught up in the New York moment.
When the sun runs out of light, were gonna take it from the moon." Tim Harrington
The quote above is seeped in a wash a sarcasm, for sure
But if there is one band that might be able to exploit enough energy from a solar powered stage to render it useless, it is probably Les Savy Fav. Performing as part of City Sol - a clean-energy-powered festival that aims to inspire interest and support for local sustainability initiatives through, music, interactive art installations, games and workshops, and numerous other elements meant to both entertain and educate. Les Savy Fav volatile and manic performance felt nostalgically reminiscent of the vintage, At The Drive In shows of my teenagehood. Of course where ATDI was serious business, Les Savy Fav is brash, yet good natured. Endlessly youthful, while somehow not looking it
at all, Tim Harrington is a showman blessed with back slapping banter, extravagant, on the spot creativity, and a Macgyver like instinct when it comes to finding ready-made stage props.
We kept a running tab on Harringtons bizarre-o behavior
- Singing from the roof of a parked van.
- Retrieving a massive water bucket from somewhere in the crowd
- Pouring water, from said water bucket on someone from the crowd (While screaming, You just won the super bowl)
- Using said water bucket as a Guiro
- Performing a song with said water bucket on his head
- Smooching some (poor?) unsuspecting girl in the audience
- Drinking a bottle of bubbles
- Blowing said bubbles from his mouth
- Cycling through costume change (Safari Tim) after costume change (Rain Coat Tim)
- Finally just settling on wearing nothing much at all
Of course, as haywire as Harrington got, he was one upped by Syd Butler, who outfitted his daughter in oversized headphones, and not only strapped into his bass, but also his baby carrier. - David Pitz

| Today were offering up a double shot of album reviews from Merge Records. Check out what Baeble writers thought about the most recent Spoon and M. Ward releases below
While sitting in my apartment in the concrete jungle of Manhattan, and listening to M. Wards Duet For Guitars #2 (Merge), I couldnt help wishing I was on an old wooden back porch somewhere in the south with the sun just about to disappear over the mountains. Wards debut, which was originally released in 2000 and impossible to find until now, shows a singer-songwriter laying down the foundation for the songs that would lead to his current success. Shimmering acoustic guitars, mandolins, dulcimers, and part time keys are perfectly paired with Wards ragged but elegant voice. Duets lo-fi vibe and shoestring budget allow the songs to speak and breathe without any extra production, resulting in the perfect companion for Bruce Springsteens Nebraska. The only exception is the brilliant 50s sounding Look Over Me, which would have benefited from the studio treatment if only to bring out the grandness of the song. KEEP READING - Tom Duffy

Few bands work as well within relatively simple, sonic confines as Spoon. Compiling a conspicuous catalogue that rarely leans hard on window dressing, the band has always known what works. Drums, bass, guitar, and keys: these would be the basic building blocks if pop music had a periodic table of the elements. Of course, Spoon would not be relevant after nearly ten years without a little creative zest peppered in to their stunning formula. That originality has just never come at the expense of the song.
So when trumpets, saxophone, cello, a plethora of percussive extras, flamenco guitar, a Japanese koto, chamberlain, and bits of studio chatter pop in and out of their sixth studio try, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Merge), it might seem appropriate to suspect the band may have over did it a bit. Of course, these Texas Tunes men have spent a decade perfecting their precise attention to detail. And when a band has a clever pop song neatly tucked away for all occasions, creativity need not require over the top composition. KEEP READING - David Pitz

The site of Heather DAngelo, Erika Forster, and Annie Hart tip toeing out on to a low lit stage is always the most welcoming of signs
even more so, when Baebles cameras are pointed in their sweet direction, taking it all in. Its actually available now
Legally! Heres how. It seems Arts and Crafts are a pretty savvy label, sending an appreciative nod in the general direction of the awe inspiring NEW MEDIA. Did you feel the ground shake when you read NEW MEDIA? I did
Anyway, we think Arts and Crafts explain it best
Traditional music business practice says we are to begin sending out copies of this album now. We give advance copies to print publications in hopes of securing features that coincide with our September date. We meet with radio stations in hopes of securing airplay. etc, etc...
Inevitably someone will leak the album.
Throughout this process, the most important people in this value chain, the fans, are given only two options - wait until September 25th to legally purchase the new album or choose from a variety of sources and download the album for free, at any time.
We hope you'll choose to support the band, and choose to pay for their album. However we don't think it's fair you should have to wait until September 25th to do so.
We believe that the line between the media and the public is now completely grey. What is the difference between a writer for a big glossy music magazine and a student writing about their favourite bands on their blog? What differentiates a commercial radio station from someone adding a song to their lastfm channel? or their myspace page?
As such, we are making the new Stars album available for legal download today, four days after it's completion. The CD and double vinyl versions of the album will still be released on our official release date, September 25th. We hope you will continue to support music retailers should a physical album in all it's packaged glory be your choice of format.
For those hankering for a warm dose of the album, the label has conveniently made The Night Starts Here available for download. Testament to the prolific power of cabin fever, the familiar sounding chamber-tronica Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan deliver on the song suggests the entire album will offer proof that warm companionship and moving music kept the band cozy and snug in the wintered, North Quebec country home Stars nestled into to record In Our Bedroom After The War. | With primly suited names fit for Victorian Theater, Im rather glad Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow managed to fend off their own existence
if only for a few centuries
so they could boldly be born of an entirely different era. Bass and guitar just seem to fit these two; more so than any powdered wig ever could (though, could you imagine if they slipped one on for a gig?). And Pinback just sounds so much better to these ears, than theater in the round. Thankfully, the two fresh faces are very much a modern day phenomenon. So modern, it seems, that Pinback is prepping to unveil their latest batch of polyphono-orchestro, classic indie fare. And while Autumn of the Seraphs will not be available until September 11th, Touch and Go are releasing a snappy single to tease fans of the band with until the long player is available. Judging by "From Nothing to Nowhere, the snappy melodies the band has staked critically acclaimed albums like Blue Screen Life and Summer in Abandon on remain whole heartedly in tact. Casting interlocking vocals, brainy bass lines, and chiming, Police-esque guitar work with a ready steady go tempo, From Nothing To Nowhere sounds flung from the barrel of a shot gun. Buy the single HERE. - David Pitz* * * * * * * * * * * *MP3: Pinback:: From Nothing to Nowhere from From Nothing to Nowhere

Two years ago, Swedish psychedelic rock band Dungen were most likely known in the U.S. to only a handful of psych fanatics and Scandophiles (We know that might not be the term, but you get the point). But as word of their fourth album Ta Det Lungt began to spread around the blogosphere and into indie rock retail, the quartet quickly became Band du Jour and Lungt rightfully found its way on numerous end-of-year lists. After prolonged tours in both the U.S. and Europe, the band needed a breather, choosing to leave the buzz world and record Tio Bitar (Ten Pieces) last year. Alternately expanding and contracting on the ideas laid out on Lungt, Bitar is more than merely a worthy successor to Lung; Its a fully-formed album whose best moments are equally as blissful as its predecessor. In a candid interview, guitarist Reine Fiske tells Baeble about the conflicts and hostilities that can accompany fame and how his band overcame them. Or have they? KEEP READING - Jason Newman

| When music is at its best, it allows you to put your own meaning to it. The songs may be so open-ended that anyone can add their own interpretation. Even if the song shares a theme every listener can recognize, it might mean something different to each person. Now that Ive run that metaphor into the ground, we can focus on the beauty of the work of multi-instrumentalist Luke Wyland under the moniker Au (Aagoo/Oedipus Records). Simple, but complex. Elegant, but down to earth.
If one were to classify Wylands music it would fall under the genre of Avant-Folk. But classifying Au would do the album injustice. Backed by several musicians, Au, produces some of the most life-affirming material heard in a long time. KEEP Reading. - Stephon Johnson

Pick Up Sticks promises to befuddle music critics intent on simple classification and ready comparisons.
While a rather odd quote to include on a solicitation for review, Kill Rock Stars certainly dont back away from issuing a challenge with their latest release. Inventive, erratic, and ultimately emotional, They Shoot Horses, Dont They? deal in the kind of odd-ball oompa and ready made numbers for a frantic, indie rock dance floor (not surprisingly, the band claim their name from an identically titled 1969 film about a depression era dance marathon) that is a bit difficult to pin down. Unearthing ramshackle, regimental drums, jittery guitar work, swirling keyboards, and a clitter clatter horn section, vocalist Nut Brown fronts an erratic and emotional band that evokes instant impressions of what this surly bunch of British Columbians can do in a live setting (check the full list below for your chance to see them).
It is an exciting listen for sure, but not one that ultimately has the scribes at Baeble scrambling for appropriate touchstones. File They Shoot Horses, Dont They away next to your Wolf Parade, Modest Mouse, and Gogol Bordello records. Just dont do it too soon. Pick Up Sticks seems to get better with every listen. - David Pitz

| To the pissed off punk, life inside a corporate shell can be pretty damn inspiring. Look no further than the cover hovering over this review. Having literally stripped the white-collars off of their sweaty backs, two bare-chested band mates embrace each other. Seems sweet doesnt it? But sentiment is not where this story ends. Pissed Jeans Matt Korvette and Bradley Fry earned their keep as a claims adjuster and account manager, respectively. But having recently cashed in the straight world for the brutal, beautiful, business they attend to on their latest album, Pissed Jeans present a rather compelling, if not arresting, corporate complaint. So our friends over at The Tripwire think Maritime is the third best export from Milwaukee, sliding Miller Lite and The Brewers slightly ahead of Davey von Bohlens crew. As a true blue, life-long Cubs fan (only 4.5 back, by the way), there is just no possible way I can justify this obvious slight. I am officially bumping the band up to #2, ahead of the boozy brew crew (who have lost 3 and a row, by the way), but still behind Miller Lite (I kind of enjoy beer).
However, one thing we are in congruence with our Tripwire friends is how totally turned on we are to hear that Maritime will release their third album, Heresy And The Hotel Choir ( Flameshovel Records) on October 16th. Produced by Stuart Sikes (The White Stripes, Modest Mouse, Cat Power, etc), the album will mark the first collaborative effort between all members of the band. - David Pitz

"The bad boy is back, and he's really, really good." (Q Magazine)
"perhaps thanks to maturity, sobriety or both, Adams' voice sounds better than ever." (Rolling Stone)
"the most cohesive and intricately arranged album he's ever made" (Associated Press)
"a career breakthrough." (Time).
It seems some serious heavy-hitters are favorably weighing in on Ryan Adams' latest album, Easy Tiger. And while all the critical acclaim is nice, its what Adams fans think that really accounts for how the record stacks up to previous releases.
Seems the fans side with the critics. Easy Tiger debuted on Soundscans Top 200 @ #7 last week with 61,000 sales
easily Adams largest single week sales figure, and highest chart position to date. So in response to such success, Adams has extended his Summer Tour. Further confirmations and ticket sale info can be found HERE. - David Pitz
