  • When Travis Morrison went and did with The Dismemberment Plan what he threatened to do all along with namesake alone
(um, dismember the band), his highly anticipated solo work failed to pick up where the D.C. art-rock quartet left off. However, word is he quickly moved on from the critical hailstorm he
took for Travisfan, assembled a new band in ‘05, the HellFighters, and quickly went to work on a new record. But when the songs didn’t come, Morrison took a break, and neatly
tucked the HellFighters away in his pocket for another day. That day apparently came in 2006. With the production help from ex-D Plan member Jason Caddell, The Hellfighters finished
recording All Y’all at Chicago Recording Company and Studio G in Brooklyn NY.

  • There can be any number of ways a band might arrive at the front door of a newly finished, studio album. Where one group might prefer to prepare a handful of signature tunes to rehearse and record the hell out of, another might take a more round about way to arrive at the material. Slide Boston born/Brooklyn bred band, Bishop Allen, into the latter…though their ’06 EP project was more of a scattering in every which direction than a brief detour. But, as it turns out, the relentless release schedule was more than just a prolific project to keep the band going. It was the search for an immaculate follow-up to their hooky, pop gem of a debut, Charm School. Witling fifty-eight songs down to a handful (and adding a few previously unreleased tracks), The Broken String (Dead Oceans) colors in the year-long project’s lo-fi scribblings with fully detailed arrangement and vivid production. It also reveals why so many have gravitated towards the band over the course of their career. KEEP READING - David Pitz

  • Cars dashing by overhead, the East River sitting at my toes, and the New York City skyline slowly flicking on, light by light, in the background…It all makes for a rather handsome setting to catch a show. But when it is a performance from Les Savy Fav, that impeccable ambiance is nearly irrelevant. There is just too much happening on stage to get caught up in the New York moment. - David Pitz

  • Like Bjork, Vashti Bunyan, Coco Rosie, and Joanna Newsome before her, Bat For Lashes’ Natasha Khan’s hypnotic dose of the semi-surreal sounds as if it could have drifted along ancient currents from another time…if not a another world all together. Of course, Khan is very much a modern woman, and her world (England) isn’t exactly eons away. But damn…the regimental drums, well worn harpsichord, feverishly flurried strings, and trance educing Theremin that couple with Khan’s mystic set of pipes on Fur and Gold (Caroline) tell a different story. - David Pitz

  • Having earned themselves a slew of critical chatter for their independently released, Wild Mountain Nation, Portland experi-blazers Blitzen Trapper brought their rousing and rambling sound to a close-to-capacity show in NYC last evening. Always wanting to decipher pandemonium from pretension, the Baeble crew piled into the Mercury Lounge to hear what all the frenzied fuss surrounding the band is all about.

When a young band meanders musical terrain at will, often times they sound lost or searching. But Blitzen Trapper’s well-informed pull on multiple sonic seams never tears apart the band’s performance. Whether wondering what Wowee Zowee might sound like coming out of their own guitars, leaning on the country croon of Crosby Stills, Nash, and Young, grazing in cow punk pastures, or sending accolades to that gloriously grungy past their area of the country is so typically associated with, Blitzen Trapper tie their tunes tight with enthusiastic and slap happy takes on their well worn influences. - David Pitz

  • The debut album by A Fine Frenzy - really Alison Sudol, the red-head featured on the cover - follows, in many ways, the tradition of the soulful and slightly world-weary female singer-songwriter. The breathy vocals, the insistent piano, the boozy confessions; they're all here. Yet, it is such formulaic construction that prevents this album from being something truly original. • When Moving Units stoked up LA dance floors in 2002 with their home town blend of east coast disco punk, they were met by the kind of good fortune most young bands only dream of ever getting a taste of. With a label deal in their pocket, and a slew of critical acclaim, things looked great for the band…then they abruptly fell apart. The band’s label folded, and amongst the collapse came rumors of a break up.

Thankfully, the southern California band decided to forge ahead and navigate the perilous challenges of an industry that did not really know what it was becoming. They also added guitarist Victor Velazquez to round out their sound.

Fortunately, it seems, once again, that it may be Moving Units time. Having recently signed to Metropolis, the band is prepping their sophomore album, Hexes for Exes, for an October 9th release.

In Addition, the band has been hand-picked to open for Smashing Pumpkins at San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium on Wednesday July 25.

    Moving Units Tour Dates:
7/25/07 - The Fillmore - San Francisco, CA
8/10/07 - House of Blues - Anaheim, CA
8/11/07 - House of Blues - Anaheim, CA
10/4/07 - Pop Scene - San Francisco, CA

  • Boasting a (somewhat) modest six members, budging Boston’s Hallelujah The Hills into the dime a dozen, kitchen collective scene may not seem quite appropriate. But the band’s windswept and lofty clamor will garner befitting comparisons to the Arcade Fires and Broken Social Scenes of the world…which is a good thing. I like a bit of excess in my musical faire, and Hallelujah the Hills do just that on their recently released debut Collective Psychosis Begone (Misra). Rounding out traditional drums, guitar, and bass, Hallelujah dip their songs in drabs of cello, violin, trumpet, and melodica. Top The Hills off with Ryan Walsh’s megaphone vocals, and the musical surplus is matched with equal parts emotion and intensity. Plus, the band has penned themselves a proper fight song, posted below. - David Pitz

  • From the very first banjo strokes, Ongiara invites comparisons to some of the big names of indie folk: Neil Young, Iron & Wine, Nick Drake, and Sufjan Stevens. While this could be considered a somewhat stifling group to work in (who’s going to want to try to compete with Neil Young??), the Great Lake Swimmers perform admirably, and manage to present a sound that is distinctly their own. The third album from the Ontario-based band is in no way a departure from their previous two albums, but rather works on developing their sound, to varying degrees of success.
