Hot to Trot

Easy Tiger: Pt. 2
Yesterday we touched on Ryan Adams’ unfortunate accident prone ways. Today we’ll ignore the Carolina klutz and his history of slippery spills and focus on that damn good music he also has a refreshing habit of putting out. Recently the good folks at Lost Highway released two tracks off of Ryan’s upcoming album, Easy Tiger. While these are but frustrating snippets, the songs offer a pretty good indication of where Ryan is going with his 9th solo release.

Big ups to An Aquarium Drunkard for spotting this!

A Fine Frenzy To Tour With Rufus Wainwright, Magic Numbers, Neko Case, and Sean Lennon

Imagine yourself at the not quite ripe age of 22, kicking off shows for the likes of Rufus Wainwright, Magic Numbers, Neko Case, and Sean Lennon. It’s a fairytale kind of story, but one Alison Sudol, aka A Fine Frenzy, finds herself at the center of the plot to. This summer, the recent Virgin Records signee will be hitting the roads in support of both the singing/songwriting behemoths she will be opening for, and her record One Cell in the Sea.

“A Fine Frenzy is the music of a young woman whose musical skills, creative spirit, and beguiling good looks bring to mind a youthful Tori Amos. Inspired by bands such as Aqualung, Radiohead and Coldplay. Alison developed the sound of A Fine Frenzy - hypnotic piano arrangements under classical American melody fused into irresistible, atmospheric songs, but comparisons don't do justice, because A Fine Frenzy brings its own beautiful, enigmatic and the real singer/songwriter style.”

Easy Tiger...
When it comes to Ryan Adams, even gripping a freshly printed ticket between your firm little fingers is never a sure bet you’ll ever get to see the Heartbreaker do what he does live. Few musicians can lay claim to the endless list of gig-killing circumstances that have befallen Adams over the years. Wicked wrist injuries, tumbles off the stage, Japanese Flu bugs, infected cysts in the ear canal…It’s safe to call Ryan a tour manager’s worst nightmare.

So when we heard the singer got mixed up with a skateboard, a twelve foot concrete bowl, and a newly torn ligament…we figured it was once again time to tear up some tickets.

But, thanks to the fine guitar work of Neal Casal, the show will go on. Phew…we thought we’d have to fire up the shredder once again…

Pick up Ryan Adams 9th(!) solo record, Easy Tiger,Tuesday, June 26th. Listen to cuts from the record HERE.

The New Pornographers: My Rights Versus Yours

August 21st might be many months off. ‘Course that doesn’t mean you need to sweat out the summer without hearing any new material from Vancouver’s rousing pop outfit (I hear they are a super group…), The New Pornographers. Why, just today we got word that the fine folks at Matador are offering up an initial taste of what’s to come.

From the forthcoming CD/LP, Challengers, listen to “My Rights Versus Yours” Now!

Also, the label has teamed up with a variety of retail outlets to offer its’ fourth installment of “Buy Early Get Now”. Order Challengers a tad on the early side you can expect to be rewarded with a variety of added goodies (mp3s, posters, merch, contests, etc) to tide you over until the record “drops”. For more information, click HERE.

Finally, the band will be playing a few shows this summer, highlighted by a July 4th show at NYC’s Battery Park (Yes! Canadians celebrating the American Independence!) and an appearance at The Pitchfork Festival in Chicago on July 15th.

The Ladybug Transistor – Can’t Wait Another Day

Every band should have a proper place to call home. And for veteran Merge recording artists The Ladybug Transistor, that comfort lies in their fabled, Victorian Brooklyn headquarters, Marlborough Farms. A gathering place for musicians Ladybug has befriended over the years, the space recently played host to a plenty of quality collaborations…the results of which can be heard on the band’s latest album, Can’t Wait Another Day.

Featuring warm contributions from members of Aislers Set, Architecture in Helsinki, The Clientele, Jens Lekman, Kevin Barker (Vetiver), Heather McIntosh (Circulatory System) and others, the release of Can’t Wait Another Day is a gloriously conceived collection of harmonious pop music that hopefully offers singer/songwriter Gary Olson and the rest of the band a chance to move on from the tragic death of drummer San Fadyl, back in April of ‘07.

Can’t Wait Another Day will be available starting June 5th, 2007.

Listen to “Three Days From Now” HERE.

For more information about The Ladybug Transistor please visit the band’s website HERE, or Merge Records HERE.

FREENYC: Siren Festival – Coney Island, NYC – 7/21/07
And the roll out of quality complimentary shows continues, with The Village Voice announcing the line-up of the annual Coney Island indie extravaganza known as the Siren Festival. Set against a unique backdrop of The Cyclone, The Wonder Wheel, beach, sand, and surf (ok…sketchy beach, sand, and surf) and no doubt fueled by piles of Nathan’s Hot Dogs and crinkle cut fries, the festival is now operating in its’ 7th year. Featuring a lusty group of international, national and local bands, as well as DJs performing on two outdoor stages, we suggest you not miss this one…especially considering Astroland’s unfortunate fate with a wrecking ball at the end of the season…

Scheduled To Perform:
NEW YORK DOLLS
WE ARE SCIENTISTS
MATT AND KIM
THE BLACK LIPS
DR. DOG
NOISETTES
LAVENDER DIAMOND
THE DETROIT COBRAS
ELVIS PERKINS
THE TWILIGHT SAD
“and many more yet to be announced!”

Editors Announce US Album Release: July 17th, 2007
“An Extraordinary piece of music…. A debut that will endure.” – NME

“The Back Room is a restless, spooky masterpiece” - Spin (40 Best Albums of 2006)

“I feel like Editors’ debut album has shocked everyone with just how stunning it is. The more I spin their songs, the more I realize just how good this band is. Editors have what it takes to be the break out artist everyone is talking about.” – Nic Harcourt, KCRW

Just a small dose of what some were saying about Editors 2006 debut record, The Back Room. So it comes with no surprise that the English band’s follow-up, An End Has a Start (Epic/FaderLabel) will be one of this summer’s most highly anticipated releases…and Baeble Blog is all too happy to provide all the details.

Direct from Editors HQ:
“Recorded in Ireland at Grouse Lodge with the Grammy Award winning producer Garret “Jacknife” Lee (U2, Green Day, Snow Patrol, Bloc Party), An End Has A Start reinforces the visceral power of Editors’ music and emphasizes the band’s desire to stretch themselves musically, lyrically, and conceptually. Whilst their debut album, The Back Room, seethed with claustrophobic menace and icy grandeur, An End Has A Start sees lead singer and lyricist Tom Smith more focused on the power of redemption and the human necessity for friendship and family in the face of death. Tom explains: “Realizing everything comes to an end is important and I think we’ve done our best to make it something glorious and uplifting as well as scary.” Tom is keen to stress, however, that not all is bleak in Editors’ world as they deftly balance the dark with the light, culminating in a sound that is both cathartic and deeply passionate. The record also reflects the hectic touring of the last two years that saw Editors play everywhere from Istanbul to Osaka: “Living in an over-populated but exciting world, the buzz of the city, electricity, neon, lights, skyscrapers, planes, billions of people all run through the lyrics of songs on the record.””

AN END HAS A START’ TRACKLISTING:
1. Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors
2. An End Has A Start
3. The Weight Of The World
4. Bones
5. When Anger Shows
6. The Racing Rats
7. Push Your Head Towards the Air
8. Escape The Nest
9. Spiders
10. Well Worn Hand

Check out the band’s MySpace Page to hear “Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors”, from An End Has A Start.

Elvis Perkins To Take Ash Wednesday On The Road This Summer

After striking himself a pile of critical paydirt with his affectionate debut Ash Wednesday (XL Recordings), LA troubadour Elvis Perkins is celebrating part of the summer of ‘07 by hitting the twisted, broken roads winding wildly across America. Beginning June 11th on the muddy banks of the Potomic River, Perkins will take his Nick Drake/Leonard Cohen/Jeff Mangum evoking brand of literate folk music on a mighty cross-country romp.

For those interested in hearing Perkins stripped down to glorious acoustic simplicity, Baeble recommends you catch the first leg of the tour; a solo route charted with Joan Armatrading in support.

Prefer the more full bodied, accompanied version of Ash Wednesday? Perkin’s band Dearland will join him for the tail end of the trip…including stops at Lollapalooza, The Newport Folk Festival, and The Siren Festival. Full tour schedule below:

Animal Collective To Release Strawberry Jam This Fall

It’s hard to believe that the beastly boys in Baltimore/Brooklyn’s renowned Animal Collective are now seven strong albums into what is shaping up to be one heck of an appealing career. But come September, this will certainly be the case when the band unveils Strawberry Jam (Domino Recording Company). Penned over the course of the last two years in various global layovers, the album first came to realization in Sept. 2005 while the band was preparing to tour Europe in support of Feels. Described in big generic terms like “emotional” and “raw”, Strawberry Jam was set to tape under the guidance of Scott Colburn in the middle of the Arizona dessert. Confessing the sound might have been influenced by “Tecate drinking, barbecues, Javelina sightings and other desert oddities” Strawberry Jam sounds like another fine record from the collective. Too bad we still have to wait four months to hear it!

Tracklist For Strawberry Jam:
01. Peacebone
02. Unsolved Mysteries
03. Chores
04. For Reverend Green
05. Fireworks
06. #1
07. Winter Wonder Land
08. Cuckoo Cuckoo
09. Derek

The collective will also be taking Strawberry Jam on the road this summer. Tour dates below:

Tourdates For Animal Collective:
05/18 - Iowa City, IA - The Picador
05/19 - Omaha, NE - Sokol Underground
05/20 - Lawrence, KS - The Granada Theater
05/21 - Denver, CO - Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom
05/22 - Salt Lake City, UT - In The Venue
05/24 - Albuquerque, NM - Launchpad

Okkervil River's The Stage Names

It would be a stout hard sell someone would be relying upon if they were to ever try and convince me that Okkervil River’s magnificent ’05 release, Black Sheep Boy, received its’ just due. Released at a time when the rest of the world was oohing and ahhhing over The Arcade Fire’s brilliant debut (Believe me, I was to…Sadly, I didn’t discover BSB until a boozy evening eight months after its’ release), the passionate, bitter, raw, emotional storytelling that Will Sheff filled the songs of Black Sheep Boy with were, undoubtedly, swept underneath the rug to make way for Win Butler and company.

So, in an effort to make sure this kind of thing never, ever, ever happens again to Okkervil River, consider this my first attempt to bang the drum for the Austin band. Set for an August 7th release, The Stage Names “dynamites the walls of Black Sheep Boy's gothic, moss-walled castle from the inside to let in the glaring sun.” A bright and sunny Will Sheff? The same man who hypothesized about the death of the president? Well, I can’t wait to hear it…

Perry Farrell’s “Satellite Party” Set To Launch for Global Warming
The inability to relate: It is probably what stops most folks from ever really attempting to challenge something that seems bigger than themselves. Luckily, Perry Farrell can’t count this as a problem. And it is his ability to connect the dots between what he sees as an endlessly growing problem threatening the globe, and how it affects his everyday life, that could make the planet a better place to live down the road.

“The world is in poor shape…I am an extreme sports athlete. And I can tell you, this year, there was less snow on those mountains than ever before…The ski and snowboard industry had extreme troubles…When I go surfing, the water reports say the quality is consistently poor, if not toxic…These are things I never thought about when I was a kid. But guess what. It is our responsibility.”

With this obligation squarely on his mind, Farrell set out 3 and a half years ago to work on building a myth from a “playful idea” spawned on a surfboard in the Pacific. Recruiting Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme, and a handful of other influential helping hands (Flea, Thievery Corporation, Hybrid, Fergie, to name a few), Farrell’s “Satellite Party” represents the latest chapter in Farrell’s ever-growing legacy. Highlighted by an unreleased Jim Morrison vocal track…the first unheard Morrison performance in almost thirty years…”Satellite Party” is a fully realized, astonishing blend of rock, electro, urban beats, and symphonic elements that will no doubt further cement Farrell’s status as one of the world’s true artistic visionaries.

But it is Farrell’s underlying humanistic endeavor that separates the “Satellite Party” project from anything he has ever attempted to do. Dubbed, the “Solution Revolution”, Farrell now finds himself at the forefront of a growing, movement tackling global warming by embracing the power of new media and the internet. To accomplish this Farrell has gathered a diverse brain trust of artists, musicians, philanthropists, investors and environmentalists he feels have the solutions to the global warming crisis. “They are not waiting for Fox News to get their point across…It is a do it yourself revolution.”

One such player, GLOBAL COOL, is leading the way by committing to ten years worth of sponsored events to raise awareness. Not only that, Global Cool – who happen to be one of the largest hedge fund investment firms in the world – intends to cast its’ vote for change by agreeing to invest in companies committed to going green, and boycotting those notorious environmental offenders. It is an environmental attack on the market…One Farrell is convinced he and his colleagues can win. “If we have solutions, how can they stop us?” Additionally, the company specializes in educational programs to help both individuals and companies learn how they can personally reduce their own energy omissions.

“This sounds like a very serious subject, but that is why they have me. To me, a Utopian society, is a playful society…we make sure that our play is as thought-out and as important as our work”.

Perry Farrell and the rest of “Satellite Party” will be playing a variety of dates in North America and Europe all summer long.

Perry Farrell’s “Satellite Party” is set for release May 29th, 2007. You can listen to some tracks from the record HERE. Visit the official website HERE for more information.

Baeble Happenings...

Last night, Push Play Episode 3 went down at Luna Lounge, with two amazing live performances by DEAD COMBO and YOUNG LORDS. They equally rocked the stage with the crowd cheering them on in excitement. Guest DJs Jake and Brendon James (Smash It Up Sundays) spun tons of classic rock n' roll, 50's olidies, and punk, and got the crowd up and dancing all night. A big thanx to Luna Lounge, Rob, Luna's Staff, Felipe, Roger, Chris, Mike, Dead Combo, Young Lords, Jake, Brendon, Maureen and to everyone who came out to the show!

On Monday night, we filmed an awesome show at Bowery Ballroom w/ MANDO DIAO, POP LEVI, and THE FILMS! (Look for the Mando Diao show on our site in a few weeks.) By the end of each full set, all three bands were sweaty messes of rock n' roll and steamy lust mixed w/ stories of margaritas and more...(only Allison H and our Green Room crew know what we're talking about).

Triple Threat: The Films, Pop Levi, and Mando Diao – Bowery Ballroom – May 14th

A late afternoon post, but one that has us inclined to boast a bit… With a much needed cup of coffee in hand, we here at the Baeble Blog still find ourselves rejuvenating from the combination of sweat, guts, grit, attitude, decibels, and bands that besieged us last evening. Playing party host to a Herculean triple-bill, THE BOWERY BALLROOM welcomed THE FILMS, POP LEVI, and MANDO DIAO to its’ stage last evening. Baeble Blog was there to witness it. Were you?

Kicking the evening off in sporty fashion, Baeble favorites THE FILMS (whom you may remember from our SXSW FEATURE) rolled their way through a tidy, yet ultimately searing mash up of wonderfully diverse influences. American rock of the 50s, British pop of the 60s, 70’s glam and punk, 80’s new wave…these swaggerin’ Southerners channeled all the best bits of rock and roll’s fabled past, and unleashed it on a crowd that was probably hoping to just settle into the show. Too bad…

Next up, POP LEVI…a 60s throwback with a dashing name… poured acid laced retro rock out of The Bowery’s speakers. Whipping up furiously fuzzy bass lines, a drummer blessed with a killer instinct, and cut throat guitar work, the man from Liverpool sent the club awash into a hazy, psychedelic freak out. Pop Levi’s onstage theatrics may have had the performer channeling a Super Bowl performing Prince. But the pulsating music he and his somewhat campy band mates churned out sounded born of bands like Cream and Blue Cheer.

Finally…While historically, they might have been critically overlooked in favor of bands like The Strokes and The Hives, MANDO DIAO have always made it a paramount point to cater themselves to the dearly devoted fan base they have managed to rack up over the years. Not surprisingly, last evening’s show validated yet another reason to believe these robust looking Swedes pack substance behind their irresistible style. On stage well over an hour, the band married a tightly knit sound with epic song writing, and a celebratory stage presence. They probably don’t need a chip on their shoulder. But if enough of one is there, they just might find that their impassioned audience will keep growing…at a time when most of the contemporaries they burst onto the scene with can’t be found.

Via Chicago: Wilco Happenings...
While I know it is only May, the Baeble Blog can personally declare 2007 to be a real humdinger of a year…at least musically speaking. From The Shins popping the cork on the New Year back in January, to Feist’s latest a few weeks back, so far, the year that has been (Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Bloc Party, Bright Eyes, Menomena, Modest Mouse, Elliott Smith), has been undeniably rewarding.

And yet, for all the high profile releases that have found their way to our ears this year, we’ve had May 15th circled in thick red sharpie since the very beginning. Starting tomorrow, Wilco’s celebrated sixth studio release, Sky Blue Sky (Nonesuch), will be precisely propped up on record shelves the world over. To celebrate, the band is feeling festive; hosting a variety of soirees that should have even the most devoted of Wilco fans in a bit of a tizzy.

Old news now, but definitely worth throwing out there… Sky Blue Sky is currently streaming in its’ entirety over at the band’s webpage. Can’t wait until tomorrow? Hear the record today, HERE.

Last Saturday the band set up camp with Garrison Keeler on the shores of Lake Wobegon…or Minneapolis’ State Theater…for a taping of A Prairie Home Companion. Chatting with Keeler along the way, the band played through five songs for the NPR crowd. If you didn’t find yourself gathered ‘round the radio last weekend, you can hear the performance HERE.

In addition to releasing Sky Blue Sky, the band will also mark Tuesday May 15th with an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Check your local listings…

Sunday May 20th, and Monday May 21st, the band will be webcasting their shows at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Sunday’s webcast will be available exclusively through a link on the Sky Blue Sky CD. Fans can see Monday’s by opening up the Wilco “Roadcase”.

Finally, Wilco will be winding across America when the domestic leg of their world tour gets rolling on June 13th in Davenport IA. Details on the entire tour, below:

6/13 Davenport, IA - Adler Theater
6/15 Indianapolis, IN - Murat Theater
6/17 Manchester, TN - Bonnaroo
6/19 Atlanta, GA - Chastain Park Amphitheatre
6/20 Charlotte, NC - Ovens Auditorium
6/22 Red Bank, NJ - Count Basie Theater
6/24 Northampton, MA - The Pines
6/25 New York, NY - Hammerstein Ballroom
6/28 Boston, MA - Bank of America Pavilion
6/29 Shelburne, VT - The Green at Shelburne Museum

... From the Festival Files
Projekt Revolution calls itself "an annual tour dedicated to featuring revolutionary, cutting-edge talent." This is debatable, since the festival is perpetually headlined by its founders - the angsty boys in Linkin Park - who are about as "cutting-edge" as Milli Vanilli are "authentic." Really, how can your band be cutting-edge when you're led by a dude named Chester? But there's no arguing with the festival's mission, which aims to bring together top artists from hip-hop and rock in an effort to bridge the gap between those styles.

Such a premise sounds like the perfect opportunity to book reunited rap-rock gods Rage Against the Machine for another festival debate (the group recently rocked the sun-baked crowd at Coachella), but Projekt Revolution can't really pull those types of longstanding acts. Still, the 2007 lineup isn't puny at all, with heavy-hitters like My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Placebo, and Julien-K all taking the stage before Linkin's closing set.

Like Live Earth, Bonnaroo, Coachella, and the countless hippie-fests that dot this summer's festival schedule, Projekt Revolution is going green. And we're not just talking about pot. "Projekt Revolution and Music For Relief have been working hard at making this event an environmentally conscious effort," explains the Projekt Revolution press release. "Besides making the tour a "Green" tour, Projekt Revolution and Music For Relief will be donating $1 from each ticket to give to American Forests for their Global ReLeaf program to plant trees to help reduce global temperatures."

The tour kicks off on July 27th and will hit approximately 25 cities before ending its run in Englewood, Colorado, on September 3rd. Unfortunately, this is a slow revolution - at least during the planning stages - and the festival hasn't really announced how much the tickets will cost. We do know that they go on sale on May 19th, though! Gobble them up at Livenation.com.

Adams and Kings
Ryan Adams’ new album, Easy Tiger, is gonna be damn good. We’re sure about this. Stephen King said so.

Apparently, the literary master of modern-day horror is a big fan of Adams’ work. If you’ve recently been to Amazon.com to pre-order Easy Tiger (release date: June 26th), you might’ve seen that the product description is a little more verbose than usual. That's because it comes from the pen of Mr. King himself. Pitchfork confirmed things with Stephen King’s publicist, who says the two artists are mutually fond of each other’s prolific work, and that King apparently wanted to show his love by writing a lengthy tribute to one of his favorite artists. Amazon merely chose an excerpt to stick onto their site. Cool.

Here's a longer excerpt:

I won't say Adams is the best North American singer-songwriter since Neil Young...but I won't say he isn't, either. What I know is there has never been a Ryan Adams record quite as strong and together as Easy Tiger; it's got enough blue-eyed, blue-steel soul (with the faintest country tinge) to make me think of both Marvin Gaye and the Righteous Brothers. Probably ridiculous, but true. And the songs themselves are beautiful-- the lyrics tightly focused and brief, the feeling one of melancholy calm that will probably be a revelation to fans that remember the old, sometimes angry Ryan Adams.

He talks enthusiastically about all the unreleased material he hopes to set free in a box set, maybe at the end of the year ("If people hear it all, then they'll get the connections," he says), but that's then. Now there's this, maybe the best Ryan Adams CD ever. And I know you want to listen to it right away. But slow down. Take your time. This album asks for that, and it will reward your full attention.

In other words-- easy, Tiger.

Ryan Adams drops in a little less than a month. To hear live versions of some selected tracks, check out A-Reminder.com.

Get Down, Get Down(loads)
Guns 'n' Roses' unreliability used to be kinda cool. Would Slash pass out during a performance, or would he ride a rollercoaster of Gibson-fueled riffage until the encore? Would Axl take the stage wearing leather pants or a kilt? Would the band's music videos ever start making sense, or would they continue to feature weird storylines involving dolphins, funerals, and people jumping into wedding cakes? Would the band self-destruct, or would they maintain the barest sliver of sobriety possible and become the next Rolling Stones? No one really knew the answers to these questions, and the band could easily tip in either direction. It was exciting.

So while it used to be cool that the fate of this crazy, whiskey-chugging band was always in jeopardy, fans have gotten really antsy regarding this whole Chinese Democracy thing. G'n'R hasn't released a full album of original material since 1991, and frontman Axl Rose has made countless unfulfilled promises regarding Democracy's release date. Things keep getting pushed back. Band members keep coming and going. Others keep falling down flights of steps and delaying the band's world tour. It used to be funny - sorta - but now it's just plain annoying.

Which is why we're so happy that some Democracy tracks have been leaked this week! The album has been sporadically leaking since 2003, but the band's management has really tightened its fist on any such drip-drop incidents. So, while time allows, we urge you to check out the available tracks before Axl's management plugs up the leak... and then we'll have to wait another decade for more G'n'R material.

Hail To The Queen
Sad. We just got word that Sacha Baron Cohen will NOT be playing Freddie Mercury, although the actor's singing skills will still be displayed in Tim Burton's next project - a silver-screen rendition of the musical "Sweeney Todd." Johnny Depp, who is still being considered for the Freddie Mercury role, will be playing the the title character in Burton's film. Alan Rickman and Helena Bonham Carter also have key roles, so look for that movie in early 2008. Still no word on a release date for the Queen movie, though... We suppose they have to actually cast it first.

And speaking of Queen, the surviving bandmates have learned a thing or two about reality TV since their cameo on American Idol last year. The band's music has been used exclusively in a musical entitled "We Will Rock You", and the show has received enough positive feedback to warrant a number of tours across the world. Now, audiences in places like Bolivia, Chile, and South Africa can experience this music-filled story that "takes place in a tongue-in-cheek dystopian future where originality and individuality are shunned, and a lone "Dreamer" appears who can fulfil a prophecy that will enable the return of rock 'n roll." Hmmm. Sounds like something from a Styx lyric sheet.

Anyway, guitarist Brian May has been very involved in the audition/casting process, but he draws the line at turning the experience into a reality TV show. "We were asked," May recently told WhatsOnStage.com, "but we said no. We all feel that TV auditioning would be contrary to the spirit of our show. It's actually an appalling lowering of standards, this whole TV-dominated culture. I promise you will never find us on some panel bullying and ridiculing young performers – I personally detest that kind of thing, and I think it's a shame that the public puts up with it." May concluded with: "How could you possibly expect to get the best performers this way? No self-respecting professional actor or actress would lower themselves to go in for this kind of humiliation. The best actors and singers will stay away."

Amen! Meanwhile, we're kinda dreading tomorrow's installment of Idol, where Barry Gibb will coach the four remaining contestants who reportedly represent America's best crop of young talent. If Blake remixes "Night Fever," he's dead to us.

TGIF
• Great success! Borat actor will make benefit glorious music of Queen!

Sacha Baron Cohen – the English actor/comedian behind such characters as Ali G, Bruno, and everyone’s favorite Kazakh reporter, Borat – is gearing up to play another larger-than-life character. Things will be a bit more serious this time, though, since Cohen’s role will reportedly be that of Freddie Mercury. That’s right: Borat will star in the upcoming Queen biopic.

Johnny Depp was originally considered for the role, but the film’s producers were more impressed with Cohen’s physical resemblance to the Queen frontman. Is this too good to be true? Didn’t we learn anything from those rumors about Christopher Walken playing Ozzy in the Motley Crüe movie? The BaebleBlog is steering itself for a hard rose of reality… but we can dream, and until somebody tells us otherwise, we’ll be preparing ourselves to watch Cohen sing “Fat Bottomed Girls” in a spangled leotard. That would be one solid movie-film. Niiice.

- 1974: Grand Funk Railroad chugs into the #1 spot with "Loco-motion,"
- 1997: Courtney Love places an ad in the Seattle Times to sell the house she had shared with husband Kurt Cobain. The carriage house in which Kurt shot himself had previously been torn down.

TH(eadlines)URSDAY
• In what has to be the most collaborative project ever, a slew of bands (30 Seconds to Mars, Panic! At The Disco, The Bravery, Deftones, The Academy Is, + 44, and several others) are teaming up with MySpace Records to record a Smashing Pumpkins tribute album that will be distributed by SPIN Magazine in July, after all the bands have posted their respective covers onto their respective MySpace pages. Got that? If you don't understand - or if really you don't care - you should just wait for the real Pumpkins album (Zeitgeist) to drop on July 7th.

• Phil Stacey, the high-singing Navy officer who recently finished 6th on American Idol, may have to travel overseas now that he's been voted off the show. Although he was given a temporary reprieve while participating in Idol's sixth season, the L.A. Times reports that "Stacey could be reassigned or asked to volunteer for a musical tour in Iraq, Afghanistan or the two naval carrier groups stationed in the Persian Gulf" if his officers deem it necessary. Another officer told the Times that he hopes Phil will bring all the finalists with him, as it's been hard getting proper entertainment for the troops overseas. We'd like to see how long Sanjaya would last in a war-torn environment... and we're sure the troops would love to see Haley in cut-off combat fatigues.

• Tomorrow night's installment of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" will feature Snoop Dog and Tom Waits, but the two won't be performing together. Damn.

• Nickelback is back on tour this summer. Somewhere, Chris Daughtry is pumping his fist in delight.

Beatles News
The Fab Four continues to make headlines today, albeit not as a whole band.

First off, Paul McCartney's been busily stirring up some hype for his upcoming album Memory Almost Full. McCartney revealed the tracklisting this week, and his website features some written explanations of the album's themes. "It's a very personal record," he says, "and a lot of it is retrospective, drawing from memory, like memories from being a kid, from Liverpool, and from summers gone. The album is evocative, emotional, rocking, but I can't really sum it up in one sentence."

Starting June 4th, Starbucks patrons can pick up the disc on their morning coffee runs. Memory will be McCartney's first release on the Starbucks-backed record label Hear Music, and his 21st solo album to date. The tracklisting is: "Dance Tonight"; "Ever Present Past"; "See Your Sunshine"; "Only Mama Knows"; "You Tell Me"; "Mister Bellamy"; "Gratitude"; "Vintage Clothes"; "That Was Me"; "Feet In The Clouds"; "House Of Wax"; "End Of The End"; and "Nod Your Head."

Moving on to John Lennon - or, more specifically - his eldest son... Julian Lennon has sold a sizable economic stake in the compositions cowritten by his dad for the Beatles. Primary Wave Music Publishing will now control a portion of the royalties generated by the Beatles catalog. No one will talk about how much money is actually changing hands here, but we bet it's A LOT. When Courtney Love sold 50% of Kurt Cobain's music-publishing rights to Primary Wave, she netted herself a cool $50 million.

Julian is set to benefit similarly, and he apparently hopes this good luck with transfer over to his inconsistent music career. "Partnering with Primary Wave provides me with a great team of supportive music professionals whose experience I can tap into as I continue to produce and record music," he stated. "I felt it was the appropriate time to take on a partner for both my interest in my father’s legendary music and for my future music endeavors." Incidentally, it's been 17 years since Julian has had a hit in the UK, and 22 years since he cracked the Top 20 on this side of the pond.

Hey Jude, don't make it bad. Take your dad's songs.... and sell 'em for a bunch of money.

Grunge Tuesday
Sometimes, on random Tuesday afternoons, our thoughts inexplicably drift to a far-away land of lumber, flannel shirts, muddy river banks, and distorted guitar. We're talking about grunge, and today's news is rife with it.

First off, we've got a reunion album from Buffalo Tom. It's been nine years since this Boston trio released anything new, and we can only watch that one episode of My So-Called Life so many times before we really miss slow-dancing to "Late at Night" during awkward school functions. Stereogum's currently flaunting the title track for Three Easy Pieces, which will be released on June 10th by Animal Records. In typical Buffalo style, the song strikes a balance between Dinosaur Jr.-style distortion and folky, americana melodies. Nice chorus, too. This is what the Goo Goo Dolls wish they sounded like, but - alas - that band sucks.

Moving along, Courtney Love has decided to auction off some of her late husband's belongings, which are reportedly worth around $40 million. Having such memorabilia around is apparently a tiresome thing. "[My house] is like a mausoleum," she reported to Spinner.com. "My daughter [14-year-old Frances Bean] doesn't need to inherit a giant Hefty bag full of flannel f***ing shirts ... A sweater, a guitar and the lyrics to 'Teen Spirit' -- that's what my daughter gets. And the rest of it we'll just f***ing sell."

Love also has an upcoming album hitting stores, but that's just totally unrelated. Right? Right? Regardless, it's called "Nobody's Daughter," and it's apparently not going to be financed by her earnings after this Cobain-filled auction. "Most will go to charity since the money isn't what I'm that interested in," she assures.

Most? So what's going to happen with the, say, remaining $3 - $5 million? Is that going into a fund to fight the remaining Nirvana bandmates in court over... well, over anything? There's always something.

ANYWAY, last but not least, Kyle Anderson just released his first book ever: Accidental Revolution: The Story of Grunge. Anderson is an editor at SPIN, and he's really been ramping up his duties there ever since the magazine changed owners (and, for the most part, staffers) in early 2006. Accidental Revolution is odd, though, in that it seems to have two different titles. The US calls it one thing, and the UK calls it Grunge: The End of Rock and Roll. Anybody know what that's all about? Or did Anderson-the-wonderchild simultaneously write two different books about grunge, tailoring each to its respective country of publication, despite the fact that the 20something Anderson was pobably just entering middle school when Cobain committed suicide? Inquiring/jealous minds want to know...
