meet the interns

Although I enjoy my role as overlord of Baeble's editorial realm, much of the credit goes out to our interns. They work tirelessly to continue our time-tested tradition of free music, new things of interest, and Ke$ha puns. Semester after semester they provided a splash of personality to the site we really enjoy and totally appreciate. So in an effort to give them a bit of a soapbox for themselves, we'd like to introduce you to our editorial interns for Winter/Spring 2011 with a few questions about their impeccable tastes. They have such varied opinions, actually, that I look forward to pitting them against each other in American Gladiator style music trivia a new version of our favorite intern game. But for now, let's just meet them! -Joe Puglisi

Matt Howard

Hello Baeble viewers and readers! My name's Matt Howard and I'd like to introduce myself as one-half of Baeble's editorial intern team. The oldest intern in the biz, I'm the 23 year-old, 5th year senior at Rutgers University. I've spent my long haul of an education focusing on my major of Journalism accompanied by a double minor in Cinema Studies and Political Science. Considering you will be reading my thoughts for the next few months, we found it appropriate for you to find out who the hell I am...

Check out this list of gold!

Favorite Album:
David Bowie's Hunky Dory

Favorite Sub-Genre:
I'm an avid listener of the output of today's folk-scene. Nothing gets me off like a good luting [Ed. Note: TWSS]. I have to admit though, I'm a sucker for some good ole' 80s synth.

Favorite Label:
Saddle Creek. Not that I am an avid listener today, but I have to pay homage to the guys that drew me into indie music.

Listening to on iTunes:
"Golden Brown" The Stranglers followed by "Floating on the Lehigh" Department of Eagles

Favorite Author/Writer:
Hunter Thomson and Bret Easton Ellis. I've been on a heavy Charles Bukowski kick recently. [Don't ask me about my business cards.]

Favorite Movie:
As clich&eaccute; as it sounds, Rushmore is my all time, no. 1. Anything with Bill Murray gets my vote. I'm a sucker for some Jean-Luc Godard and have the tattoos to prove both. (Anna Karina and Steve Zissou) [Seriously jealous of Matt's ability to pull off tattoos.]

Least Favorite Artist:
Lady Gaga. Bowie already did it.

Why Baeble?
I was unfortunately born without the musical gene. Although burdened with the rhythm of a deaf gorilla, I still have great passion for eccentric tunes. I found that I had a knack for sentence structure while studying journalism. I despised my journo courses due to the bland objective reporting. I enjoy writing and have a deep desire that my readers will equally benefit. Writing for Baeble has offered the opportunity to participate in my favored, once unattainable, artistic medium.

My Promise to the Readers:
I will provide you all with a genuine account of my covered material. I'm a fan like you. My participation at Baeble is a voluntary contribution to the indie arts movement. In regards to my sense of humor, I promise to mock everyone equally [Amen.]. I hope that my exhilarating experience at Baeble is projected through my writing. [Or at least through your preference for double spacing sentences. Legit! Thanks Matt!]

Siobhan Fludder

Hello everyone! I am Siobhan Fludder, one of the editorial interns here at Baeble. I'm 20 years old (but will be 21 at the end of the month! Can I get a 'WOOOO!'). I'm a Junior at Fordham University majoring in Communications and Media Studies with a concentration in Film and minor in Political Science. Here is a little bit about me so that you can get a background of one of your blog contributors and maybe understand why some of my posts may hint at Bieber fever (forgive me). [I might be encouraging this.]

Favorite Album:
Third Eye Blind - Out of the Vein

Favorite Sub-Genre:
I will be forever fond of the post-grunge bands of the 1990's (see 'Favorite Album'). Although Out of the Vein was technically from 2003, Third Eye Blind is perpetually stuck in the 90s, just like me.

Favorite Label:
Fueled by Ramen. I'm a sucker for pop/rock/punk fusions, and have great reverance for the label that helped introduce us all to Jimmy Eat World.

Listening to on iTunes:
Lights. As you may have begun to gather, I am a catchy-music addict. This synth/pop Canadian girl-wonder really knows how to speak to a sista with her fairyland voice and pop electronic tunes. I've currently got a loop of "Saviour", "Face Up", and "Pretend (Reprise)" on repeat.

Favorite Author/Writer:
While I want to say JK Rowling, as a die-hard Harry Potter elitist [Which is OK, just ask these guys, who I once saw play a set in a living room in Brooklyn], I'm rather attached to Sarah Turnbull and her book "Almost French".

Favorite Movie:
Love Actually. Now before you judge, it is also my 50 year old father's favorite movie. We love all things British. We love Bill Nighy. And the message is something I really believe the world should listen to. Haha... seriously. Call me a girl! But, well, I am.

Least Favorite Artist:
Avril Lavigne. Confession: In seventh grade I was all about her music, although even then I hated her as an individual. But I am no longer in seventh grade, no longer listen to "Sk8tr Boi", and the strong dislike for the girl still remains.

Why Baeble?
I have enjoyed writing ever since my mom taught me how to spell my name and I told her to stop lying because spelling a name you pronounce as "Shivon" S-i-o-b-h-a-n makes no sense [Ha. Truth bombs.]. Thanks to this passion for writing, I've been excited at the chance to finally have a go at it in the real world, which I am lucky enough to do at Baeble! I love the mixed wit and sincere interest that Baeble offers in takes on today's upcoming music, and am looking forward to broadening my melting pot of sonic sounds as a new indie music listener.

My Promise to the Readers:
I will always make an effort to cover every topic with consideration to the passionate importance it may have for the reader. I have an open mind and a soft spot for artists who are giving their all no matter what, which is probably the most appealing aspect of indie music to me, and I will work hard to do justice to the drive behind the people behind the music. And luckily my love of pop culture is accompanied by a self deprecating sense of humour, so no matter how many times I paid the DJ at my school's bar to play "Take it Off" by Kesha, I will endorse Joe's suggestion that she run for President of Hefty. [Bonus points for allowing me to make a recycling my line/waste management joke in relation to Ke$ha. Thanks, Siobhan!]
