Carly Rae Jepsen took to the streets of Santa Monica alongside a camera crew from Funny or Die to surprise a few dozen lucky passersby with some candid renditions of hits like "Run Away With Me," and, of course, the internationally explosive hit "Call Me Maybe." Alongside an acoustic guitar, she reimagined her songs with a more succinct and clean sound.
When she first started belting out tunes, many took her to be one of many in a line of street musicians, magicians, and comedians who frequent the Promenade hoping to make some cash. It wasn't long until she had amassed a gathering around her impromptu jam, where her true fans knew not to mistake her for a lookalike.
By the end of the performance, Jepsen managed to congest the promenade with eager fans, a surprising proportion of whom witnessed the solid performance in its entirety through smartphone cameras. One operator of a pushed street cleaning machine remained unfazed by the many dozens circling Jepsen as he found a way through the crowd mid-performance.
For one of the biggest names in pop music who is able to sell out major venues nationwide, a street performance must have been a major change in scenery. Perhaps she felt like having some fun with a few renditions in which she got a more intimate experience with her followers free from the pressure of performing in front of the masses.
In any regard, a few Californians got quite the cameo and know could tell everyone without doubt what the most interesting part of their day was. Be sure to check out our video interview with Ms. Jepsen below.
