t.g.i. mixtape 94

Punxsutawney Phil did not his shadow on Wednesday, which means we're supposed to have a plethora of bad "spring" related punny headlines about the whole ordeal (better than "cold" ones). The hog's track record is about as reliable as most weather predicitions, so we won't hold our breath for a break from the cold (and some of you southerners don't need it). But luckily, rain or shine, cold or blazing hot, like the postal service, and the Papa Johns by my apartment, WE ALWAYS DELIVER.

For your listening pleasure, the 94th installment of our series, you might know it, called "Thank God It's Mixtape" (yeah that's what it stands for... fun facts)! Happy Friday.

1. "Helplessness Blues" - Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues

Let's kick it off with this week's number one swapped MP3. This first single off an album of the same name hints strongly that our beloved Fleet Foxes haven't lost any of their mountain-y goodness. The album is out 5/3, which is WAY TOO LONG FROM NOW COME ON PEOPLE.

2. "Louder Than Ever" - Cold War Kids - Mine Is Yours

California usually leans more surf and less dark Americana, so Cold War Kids sounding like a gothic Kings of Leon baffles me a bit (they happen to share a producer now). Regardless, this is a catchy song. Dismiss it at first if you want, but be warned, it will haunt you later. The album is out now.

3. "New Beat" - Toro Y Moi - Underneath The Pine

If it 'aint broke, don't fix it. Toro is on the tape two weeks in a row because damn, this sh*t is good.

4. "Burn It Down" - SIMS - Bad Time Zoo

The Doomtree MC is releasing his second solo album soon (2/15), and his penchant for solid beats is no less awesome. Look out for this to be the soundtrack to some sporting events (if it isn't already).

5. "Too Beautiful To Work" - The Luyas - Too Beautiful To Work

I plugged these guys a while ago but their album is finally dropping in February and this song debuted on Pitchfork so it's time to bring it back. Canada, indie rock, usually strong indicators of "cool sounding".

6. "Satellite" - The Kills - Blood Pressures

The new album from the Kills won't fully melt your face until April, but the heat was finally turned on when the first single dropped this week. Preorder the album and you can get the single for free right now.

7. "Hamilton Road" - Ducktails - Hamilton Road 7"

Sure, this dropped in December, but I missed it, and I'd hate for you to suffer the same fate. It's a little more laid back than some dance-heavy Ducktails bangers, but it's still fun!

8. "Young Blood" - The Naked & Famous - Passive Me, Aggressive You

As my roommates (who gave me this band) put it: Naked & Famous are kind of a Passion Pit/MGMT amalgamation. You can preorder the album, it's out 3/14.

9. "The Wilhelm Scream" - James Blake - James Blake

While I still disagree with 3 EPs counting as one "top ten best album", it's hard to deny James Blake is one of the more incredible progressive electronic artists floating around today. This first single from his debut album promises his attention to sonic detail is not going to be in short supply. Kind of pumped.

10. "Fell In A Love With A Girl" - The White Stripes - White Blood Cells

RIP White Stripes.
