The universe is scary big...a vast, ever expanding vacuum of gas and dust and rocks and extreme darkness and god knows what else lurking behind that next galaxy. Anything is possible way out there in outer space. Random, I know, but I only bring up such cosmic ramblings because they provide apt metaphor for Starwalker
; a new, synth-wielding project from Air's Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Icelandic composer Bardi Johannsson.
The duo have recently torn the wrapper off their introductory single, "Losers Can Win"; a twinkly stardust of synthy bits and pieces that'll ooze over you in the warmest way. The new partnership for the two well-entrenched artists is an exciting one for its members. Johannsson recently told us, "We wanted to think of Starwalker as a new project without any rules." Though it sounds like the pair has sonic anarchy at their disposal should they require it, Air fans ought to be comfortable with the initial path these fellows are orbiting in. The musical components (drums, bass, guitar, keys) are pretty standard and don't overwhelm; an element that's apparently by design. "Music doesn't have to be complicated to be good," Johannsson added. "By adding emotion on top of a few notes you can have something special." In "Losers Can Win", that emotion is built into the narrative. Everyone loves an underdog story. "We always hear stories of the high school nerds that end up getting all the girls, the poor being happier than the rich etc. Simple things can change the world. Losers Can Win." Amen.
