Thank god it's mixtape! I mean Friday. Whatever, same thing. All that matters is that it's the weekend and we have 10 new tracks to kick it off. This is the third volume of my mixtape series, and may just be the best one yet. Along with some amazing new talent, we have songs from some well established indie rockers, such as Cursive, Immaculate Machine and Swan Lake. See if you can get that song by the Whip out of your head. Have a good weekend! -
Greg Lozoff
1. Immaculate Machine - Sound the Alarms
Ever since I heard "C'mon Sea Legs" for the first time, I have been obsessed with
Immaculate Machine. Seeing them open for the New Pornographers didn't hurt either. I have been waiting to hear a sample from they're new album for awhile now and it does not disappoint.
2. An Horse - Postcards
This is just a great song by Brisbane, Australia's
An Horse.
3. Cursive - From the Hips
"I'm at my best when I'm at my worst" sings
Tim Kasher, front-man of emo indie-rock band,
Cursive. I have always considered myself more of a
Good Life fan than a Cursive fan, but things may just be turning around with the insanity known as "From the Hips".
4. The Naked Hearts - Call Me
The Naked Hearts are Amy Cooper and Noah Wheeler from New York City. This awesome little ditty can be heard on their upcoming EP, entitled
These Knees. Be sure to check it out.
5. The Whip - Dubsex
I'm loving
the Whip right now. This song is incredibly addictive. Makes one want to get out of one's seat. Makes one want to dance. Dance one dance!
6. Swan Lake - A Hand at Dusk
Swan Lake is what happens when amazingly talented people come together to make music. If you weren't aware, the band is composed of
Dan Bejar (New Pornographers, Destroyer),
Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes) and
Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown). With this cast, are you really surprised the band is as good as they are? This track will be on Swan Lake's new LP which they will be releasing later this month, entitled
Enemy Mine
7. Deradoorian - High Road
This song is by the incredibly talented
Angel Deradoorian, who you may know better as a member of the
Dirty Projectors. This song can be heard on her brand new
Mind Raft EP. Believe me when I say that this isn't the only great song on the EP.
8. Team B - On My Mind
Team B is the project of
Kelly Pratt, who you may know from his work with the
Arcade Fire or
Beirut. Either way he's a great musician who has put out his own full length album that is very different from either of the aforementioned bands. Please do check him out!
9. Miranda Lee Richards - Early November
Miranda Lee Richards is a bright, young up-and-coming talent from Los Angeles, California. If you like what you hear, you should pick up her debut album,
Light of X, which is in stores now.
10. Kinetic Stereokids - Have a Nice Day
This is a very pretty song by the Illinois native,
Kinetic Stereokids. They have a little bit of a New Pornographers kind of sound to them, which is very pleasing to the ears. I'm really looking forward to hearing their debut LP,
Basement Kids. Keep an eye out for these guys.
