If you are a firm believer that time and space weighs heavy on a recorded piece of music, check out this quote from
The Black Keys Patrick Carney:
"The place is covered with dust, it smells like a moldy cabin, and it looks like a haunted house. It was fitting for our first time going into a real studio."
Me thinks the bands fifth full-length,
Attack & Release (
Nonesuch) is going to be a winner.
Recorded at
Paul Hamanns illustrious Suma Studio outside Cleveland Ohio,
Attack & Release will be anything but an ordinary listening experience. Anytime a band taps
Danger Mouse to fill the role of producer pretty much rules out that kind of possibility. Initially brought together by Danger Mouses desire to have the Keys contribute a few songs for an album he was developing with Ike Turner (RIP), the two quickly realized they were actually laying the groundwork for an album of their very own. Word is guitarist/vocalist
Dan Auerbach and drummer Carney also rose to the occasion, making the most out of their first studio experience. A historically minimalist blues infused duo,
Attack & Release features a few new sounds (organ, moog, and banjo) as well. Auerbach and Carney also tapped some additional collaborators to pitch in as well, including guitarist
Marc Ribot and multi-instrumentalist
Ralph Carney (Patrick's uncle)--both veterans of, among other things, Tom Waits' band. And if that wasnt enough, the closing track, "Things Ain't Like They Used To Be," features Auerbach singing along side eighteen-year-old bluegrass/country-singer
Jessica Lea Mayfield.

Attack & Release will be released by Nonesuch Records on April 1st.
