Last year's Carrie & Lowell was one of our top records 10 records of the year. The sparse and intimate record was a change of pace from the larger than life theatrics of Sufjan Stevens' previous record, The Age of ADZ as well as the baroque lush drama of Come On Feel the Illinoise. It's nuts to think that Illinois is a decade old now. Where does the time go? I'm going to blink and Funeral is going to be 30 years old and I'll be an old man.
Anyways, we're getting a reissue of Illinois this year (on a star shaped vinyl for reasons that I don't particularly understand), and Stevens has shared a previously unreleased version of Illinois's seminal track, "Chicago." Although nothing will ever hold my heart the way the album version of that track does, it's fascinating to hear the early stages of the song.
