Well it's Friday again, and what a better way to celebrate then with my second ever T.G.I.Mixtape. On Volume 2 you will find even more great songs, mostly from new artists who are just emerging onto the scene with debut albums. But there are a few songs here from more established artists as well, giving you a nice balance of old and new to kick off your weekend. So whether you want to sit back and relax or get up and dance, the choice is yours. Just listen and enjoy, one way or another.
1. Plants & Animals - Bye Bye Bye
I think the perfect way to start off this week's mixtape is with a lovely song by my fellow Montrealers Plants & Animals
. They're debut album Parc Avenue
is outstanding and I highly recommend it if your in the mood for some good indie rock. What I am really looking forward to however is their show at Bowery Ballroom with Blitzen Trapper
later this month. Should be amazing.
2. Gigantic Hand - SuAnne Big Crow
Next we have a lovely little chanson by a talented group of Brooklynites called Gigantic Hand
. There debut album, Permanent Skin
, will hit stores on February 24th. That's next week people. So be sure to pick yourself up a copy.
3. Marissa Nadler - River of Dirt
This is just a beautiful song by an incredibly talented singer/songwriter. If you haven't heard anything by Marissa Nadler
, now is your chance to check her out. Believe me, you'll be glad you did.
4. Throw Me The Statue - Ship
I don't know much about this band
, but I think this song speaks for itself. This is a truly beautiful composition and I can't wait to hear the rest of their stuff. And I think if this song is any indication, this band is something to watch out for.
5. Papercuts - Future Primitive
This song has been getting a lot of play around these parts. This is the first I have heard from San Francisco singer songwriter Jason Quever
and so far I am very impressed. I feel like I should be ashamed of myself considering he has put out 2 albums before his latest, which is to be called You Can Have What You Want
. I guess better late than never right?
6. Pomegranates - Corriander
are back! I was a big fan of their debut LP, Everything is Alive
, and I am so excited to hear what they have for us this time around. This track, which will be on their new album Everybody Come Outside
, shows a more mature side of the band and includes some nice female backup vocals. The album comes out on April 14th so be sure to check it out.
7. The Lovetones - Journeyman
I'm loving this track right now. This song is by Australian songwriter extraordinaire and his band, the Lovetones
and will be featured on their brand new album (with an exceptionally pretty album cover) entitled, Dimensions
8. The Decks - Skeleton
This one is by Grosse Point, Michigan's The Decks
. I expect big things for this band in the near future, so keep an eye and an ear out for them. Breath and Bone
is the name of their debut LP and your going to have to wait until May 26th to hear it. But this song is a nice sample of what you will get on the album.
9. Laura Barrett - Blue Bird
What a beautiful voice. This song is by Canadian singer/songwriter Laura Barrett
. If you were wondering what instrument Barrett is using on this track, wonder no more. She is playing what is known as the kalimba, a tiny African instrument that looks kind of like a miniature wooden piano that you play with your thumbs. Very interesting indeed.
10. Aidan Moffatt & the Best Ofs - Big Blonde
You may know Aidan Moffatt
from Arab Strap, The Sick Anchors, or as L. Pierre. Or you may simply know him for who he isand that is a kick-ass musician. He has been making amazing music for many years now and his newest LP, under the Aidan Moffat & the Best Ofs guise, is no different.
Well my friends, I hope you have enjoyed listening to this week's mixtape as much as I've enjoyed making it for you (especially making that banner). Stay tuned next Friday for a brand new mixtape full of lovely new music. Have a great weekend! -Greg Lozoff
