21 year-old indie folk-rocker Jessica Lea Mayfield
released her sophomore full length on February 8th, titled Tell Me
. Garnering major media attention, the album is featured on Rolling Stone
for a brief, yet praise-filled, review. Baeble had the pleasure of interviewing Mayfield
in 2009 while she was on tour for her debut album Blasphemy So Heartfelt
. Highlighted in both articles, it is clear that Mayfield's knack for songwriting is the engine that breathes life into her musical path. Her lyrics possess a frank sincerity that transcend the melodramatic angst of young love that tend to haunt the tracks common to her peer group.
Her first single "Our Hearts Are Wrong" encapsulates this talent. As Rolling Stone puts it, she examines "relationships with the sly eroticism of someone who's lived a little". Clearly; in three weeks I too will be 21, and my emotional maturity still refuses to reach a point that allows the phrase "our hearts are wrong" into my vocabulary. Like her debut record, Tell Me
is produced by The Black Keys'
Dan Auerbach. This influence, in addition to a gifted musical gene pool, has assisted the birth of such a wisened and truthful album. Tell Me
is out now, and the first single, "Our Hearts Are Wrong", is available here as a free download.
