Remember when Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
dropped their video for "Thrift Shop"? It instantaneously went viral - with both love and hate. Some people had the verses memorized like they were being tested on it and it counted for 90% of their final grade (don't act like you didn't get excited when you nailed the timing on the "But shit, it was ninety-nine cents!" line) and some people thought it was a little too silly for their taste, looking at Macklemore as just another wannabe rapper. Regardless of how you feel about it though, you have to admit it's inspiring: taking a comedic, low budget video and turning it into a fucking empire.
Macklemore just posted on his Facebook page that the video officially reached one billion views.
Along with a screenshot, he stated
, "It started with an idea, a $5,000 budget and a community of folks that lent us their stores, clothes, cars, time, energy & love. It now has a billion plays. 1,000,000,000. Who could have ever imagined.... thank you all." It's funny - the song that everyone loves to hate continues to prove its massive amount of success years after its release.
