A few weeks back, we introduced you to 23-year-old singer-songwriter James Bay
, who has been absolutely killing it across the pond. It's an exciting time for the "Hold Back The River" singer who just dropped his EP of the same name on November 24th and picked up the esteemed Brit's Critics Choice Award!
His emotionally fueled lyrics and musical arrangements have us hooked, and we were pretty excited to nab a cool buzz exclusive with him. Check out what James had to say about what's it's like to be asked for an autograph, who in the industry intimidates him, and how he likes his burger cooked.
James' debut album will be out sometime in 2015.
What song of yours do you most enjoy playing for people and why?
There is no one song that I enjoy playing more than the others. I'm still getting the sound right with the band, live on stage. So I guess some come across (to me) better than others at the moment. But lately, with people knowing the words to a lot of them, it makes playing every song such a great experience.
What album can immediately transport you to another time?
Paul Weller's 'Stanley Road' takes me back to being a kid at nursery school, and just generally reminds of (what I remember) of small town life in the 90s.
What does the term celebrity mean to you?
Not a lot. Not nowadays at least. It used to be relatable only to someone who was being celebrated for their great achievements and the public appeal that followed because of those achievements, which makes sense to me. But, for my generation it seems to have been blurred into meaning something completely different.
Has there ever been a time you have or wanted to walk offstage because of a mistake, or a bad crowd?
No, I don't like to let anything defeat me on stage. I grew up playing open mics where part of the fun of it was the challenge of getting the drunk guys at the back of the room to shut up and listen. I've made some mistakes live before, but it's always better to play through them. The show must go on!
What other job would you like to try if music wasnt part of your life?
I'd like to be an illustrator for other musicians' artwork or maybe for children's books/movies.
Best life advice youve ever received that resonated with choices youve made in your career?
Don't give up.
How does it feel when someone wants to have their picture with you or an autograph? How did it feel the first time someone asked?
I'm glad people feel like they can come up and say hi. It's only happened a handful of times, but I understand it. I've done it myself to artists I love to listen to in the past. There's a little thrill in it, I get it.
Is there anyone in music who/does or would be able to intimidate you if in the same room?
I don't know. I don't think so. Though I do get a little freaked out by the idea of meeting some of my idols. I'd be so in awe, it'd be a bit scary I reckon.
What do you think of festival fashion, the fact that festivals can be more about clothes than music, and what do you think people should actually wear to festivals?
A lot of festivals are rainier than we'd like them to be, so wellies are always wise. But, no one would even be able to 'do' festival fashion without a big field and loads of great music, so I don't really think fashion is ever coming before the music at festivals. It's just a fun sideline to going on the mini holiday that is a festival!
Whats your favorite statement making stage wear?
The hat's done me pretty well so far.
What song do you wish you had penned?
"Lean On Me" by Bill Withers.
How do you like your burger cooked?
Medium or Med/Well, depending on the weather.
